Fever for Rudy runs high: poll

America's mayor is America's hottest politician, according to a new poll.
Rudy Giuliani topped Quinnipiac University's national "Thermometer" survey of 1,900 voters, far outpacing Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.), who came in eighth.

New York's feisty former mayor also wiped the floor with President Bush and Vice President Cheney, who are so unpopular these days they didn't even make the top 10.

"The first Thermometer of American Leaders is a cold shower for President Bush, Vice President Cheney - and for Sen. Clinton," said Quinnipiac pollster Peter Brown.

Rudy cleaned up New York City WITHOUT THE DEATH PENALTY. Yeah, Pataki put it on the books, but it's never been used, and some NYC DA's wouldn't even ask for it. So much for capital punishment as a crime deterrent. I'd vote for Rudy over a Southerner like Mark Warner or John Edwards, because it's time for another Northern president. Wouldn't take him over Hillary Clinton, Evan Bayh or Al Gore, though.

When Hillary ran against him for the Senate, his poll numbers were in the 20s in NY. He dropped out of the race, so we'll never know what would have happened, but most people felt Hillary would have wiped the floor with him. But that was pre-9/11 ~ the rest of the country never heard of him until the PR machine painted him as some kind of hero!!

What exactly did he do that day that was heroic? The victims' families tried to find out at the 9/11 sham hearings, but Rudy spent most of the allotted time doing what he does best, slapping himself on the back ~

I hope the Repubs fall this and let him run. Once the country gets a real look at Rudy, as they did at the '9/11 police chief', Kerrik, nominated by Bush as Homeland Security Chief and who should always be mentioned when Rudi's name comes up, it will totally shatter the fairytale image that has prevailed since the fairytale image of a 'hero' was created for him after 9/11!

If he is the Repub. nominee though, it will give us an opportunity to ask what should have been asked a long time ago 'what did he do to protect NYC from a second attack, after 1993 and particularly the WTC? So far, all I remember Rudy doing was angering people by claiming that NYC was the 'safest city in the world'!

5. You're first sentence is not true.

His numbers were not in the 20's. He was incredibly competitive with her and ahead in some polls. He dropped out of the race because of his prostate cancer.

15. Giuliani knew he had prostate cancer for 6 weeks when he dropped

out. His numbers were going down upstate and they knew it was unwinnable. Rather than have his gloriously constructed political career end in a sound defeat by Hillary, he pulled out. Call it what you will but it seems clear than Rudy LOST to Hillary Clinton even with home court advantage.

He won't fare well in a national race either. The more people see of Rudy, the less they like him.

The poll numbers you cite are static when you take in margin of error. The longer trend was Rudy going down upstate which is what they were counting on for his victory. The more they saw of him, the less they liked him.

And how about this:

The poll of 793 New York State residents shows Giuliani leading Clinton by 47 percent to 45 percent, with 8 percent undecided. In June, an SRI poll showed the Republican Mayor leading the First Lady by margin of 49 percent to 40 percent, with 12 percent saying they had no opinion. The latest findings show Mrs. Clinton gained in almost every demographic group covered by the survey.

Your numbers only go through March. After he had his lawyer announce on Mother's Day that he intended to divorce his wife, which was when she first heard it, his numbers plummeted. After that it was apparent that he would not win. As for his battle with prostate cancer, it did not stop him, until it became obvious he would lose ~

He also insulted his wife and children by demanding that his mistress move into Gracie Mansion ~ unless fundies have a complete change of heart, I think Rudi's sexual exploits and 'family values' may be a bit much for them.

The list of Newfields's indictments includes the mayor's pervasive racist policy, education system disasters, union antagonisms, violations of major constitution rights, the undermining even of existing programs for the poor and, most damaging from the point of view of the constituency which most enthusiastically supported him, fiscal irresponsibility.

If we were smart, we wouldn't read or comment about any Presidential preference poll before the summer of 2007 because:

1) this far out, the pros and cons of each candidate are known only to the politically obessed who don't make up the majority of voters. The average voter is reacting solely to name familiarity at this point

2) it doesn't evaluate candidates in a campaign setting. Rudy may be a personally popular guy, but once he's competing against Frist/Allen/Brownback et al for the nomination, they'll be playing up his perceived negatives: pro choice, pro-gay rights and pro-gun control. That'll change the equation radically

3) quite frankly, we have better things to do (the 2006 elections for example?) and don't need the distraction.

20. Rudy has open advantages and one hidden disadvantage

It's easy to see that Giuliani, were he able to get through the Republican primaries, would appeal to the moderate middle, the disaffected Republicans, etc. From that perspective he would be tough to beat. But the Constitutional Party, a joke in 2004 because of wingnut devotion to Bush, would offer a very convenient place for a popular wingnut to run as a third party alternative. The wingnuts may not own the Republican party enough to guarantee a wingnut nomination but they carry at least enough weight to sink a moderate in the general election under the right third-party circumstances, should they choose to do so.

21. I'll say this much ...

I will be forever grateful that we had Rudy on 9/11 because we weren't getting any leadership from Washington. He tried to keep everyone calm and managed to keep things moving in the middle of chaos. I watched the towers collapse on television; I heard the sirens from emergency vehicles in my town (and surrounding towns) rushing to help; I heard many fighter jets fly over my house ... I was scared! But when Rudy appeared on television, acting like a leader and letting us know that there was SOMEONE out there in charge, I honestly felt better.

BUT ... during his last couple of years as Mayor of NYC, he started to exhibit some fascist behavior, which included "quality of life" laws and setting up a decency committee to weed out "offensive" artwork from city-funded museums.

He's no better than the rest of them.

32. I had the opposite feeling about him after he showed up. I wondered

if he realized why he had been told not to build a bunker in the WTC for himself because it might be hit again. His bunker, which many NYers objected to, was presumable to protect himself and his family and friends should anything happen, yet he did nothing to protect the rest of NY from what most intelligent people believed, would happen again. Rudi was never very good at listening to other people.

That day, the only reason we saw him wandering the streets was because he couldn't get into his bunker.

He is the one who ordered the steel to be shipped out before the fire department had a chance to do their standard fire investigation. He also insulted the firemen, the REAL HEROES of 9/11 (compare what they did to what Rudi did eg) when he wanted his rich friends to be able to get down to rebuilding ~ he was always the friend of the wealthy in NY.

He is now involved in some secret security firm, and oddly enough was present, right near the site, of the London bombing, but wouldn't answer questions about that ~ I believe his firm was also present in Egypt when that bombing happened. I wouldn't trust him with anything, let alone my security ~

He put the totally unqualified thug, Bernie Kerik in charge of the NYC police Dept ~ and then recommended him for Homeland Security Chief ~


He was always fascist. His father was a low level member of the mafia ~ he's not a nice guy. Ask his wife ~
