Gingrich tells Rumsfeld to dig in for 70-year war
http://feeds.bignewsnetwork.com/?sid=cb46d45dd5fc3d05

U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is circulating a strategy paper by former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, asking top deputies to take another look at the QDR with it in mind.

"What does he propose that we have overlooked?" wrote Rumsfeld in a Jan. 30 memo marked "for official use only" to Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Peter Pace, Vice Chairman Adm. Edmund Giambastiani and Eric Edelman, under secretary of defense for policy. "Are there any adjustments to our (Quadrennial Defense Review) roadmaps that could benefit from his ideas?"

Former House Speaker Gingrich wrote the paper, "Essential Strategic Changes in National Security 2005-2007," in October. Responses to Rumsfeld's questions were due back last week.

Gingrich posits the creating an "Intelligent Effective Limited Government" which will use "entrepreneurial public management and modern information systems to modernize the government into a system compatible with the speed, agility, flexibility and efficiency of modern global companies."

3. These guys terrify me...
Newt talks about
...."entrepreneurial public management and modern information systems to modernize the government into a system compatible with the speed, agility, flexibility and efficiency of modern global companies."

You mean like Enron and Worldcom?

Their only weakness is that they plan for US to fight their wars. All we have to do is simply NOT do it. Hard to convince some people, tho.

6. Uh...is there something wrong with this?
"modernize the government into a system ... of modern global companies." A nation is not a "global company", period. The goals and purposes of a "global company" are not only not those of a nation, but are antithetical to those of a nation. Boys and girls, we are very near the borderline, on the other side of which lies horror...

14. TRULY. I cringe whenever I hear some politician talk about how
government oughta be run like a business.

They just don't get it.

Government is NOT a business. Business is strictly IN business to do one thing: make a profit. That's all, folks. NOTHING else matters. Everything else comes in - well, not even second. Maybe eighth. It's all about making money. And you do that by any means necessary, even perhaps - umm - extra-legally? You certainly cut corners even if you abide by the letter of the law. ANYTHING to cut expenses and maximize profits.

But government IS NOT a business. Never was. Never should be. It's just not the same thing. A government's reason for being is NOT, first and foremost above all else, to make a profit. It's to benefit the common good. Mainly guaranteeing the safety of your citizens - which goes far broader than just mere warfare and all things military. It means keeping your citizens safe on their own streets from local crime, and thievery of - yes - business as in consumer protection, environmental protection, workers' protections, minorities' and children's protections, health-and-wellbeing protections, the protection of the quality of our water, air, and ground, the protection of a level playing field so everybody who jumps in the pool has the opportunity to swim at least a lap or two.

Those things cost money, which is why we pay taxes. It's a collective. A cooperative. It's not for profit. Politicians miss this one EVERY FRICKIN' TIME!!!

And unfortunately, we've got politicians in there now who worship at the altar of the god "Bidniss." They don't belong in government if they do that. They belong in the private sector with all the other pirates and would-be pirates scratching and clawing to get ahead and make a buck.

I'm all for capitalism, but even that can't be unrestrained.

25. Very concisely put, calimary.
What is it about Americans that we keep holding up business as a model for the way to run everything? Other cultures (could leave out the "other" since we don't really have one) don't make this mistake -- they know better.

29. Very nicely said, calimary.
:applause:

Though, you must admit, not all politicians sing this mantra. There are a few progressives who remember what the government is for.

We the people, in order to form a more perfect union,
establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility,
provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and
secure the blessings of liberty, to ourselves and our posterity ...

to the global companies.

the corporate repukes have theorized and put into practice -- starting with reagan -- that tax payers are a huge mine -- full of diamonds and gold. etc

they funnel the tax payer wealth to these guys and we will of course get screwed.

15. That was an interesting article.
Ol' Newt seems to have figured out that we are sliding on a number of issues. We are no longer the place for the smartest; the US in fact has had a "brain drain" for a long time. There was an article in the harvard review which told that "super-smart people don't want to come here any longer to study, mainly because of the police-state environment" and other factors.

Newt has also recognized that we are being overshadowed by the BEM's (Big Emerging economies), China and India.

He has some really weird ideas and suggestions for improving things.

Worst suggestion: he wants to dismantle the entire armed forces. make it all privatized. A private army. There's just one problem, and he obviously overlooked it:

Private armies cost more than government ones. Look at how much we've spent on CACI and Titan and Blackwater. Our treasury has been looted. So there will be NO 70-year war. Sorry newt.

22. "He has some really weird ideas"--the only one of his ideas
with which I remotely agree is that he has said that the current era reminds him of the two decades immediately preceding the U.S. Civil War.

N.B. Historian James McPherson calls the U.S. Civil War "The Second American Revolution."

...and services being turned over to foreigners with H1b visas, government is now the big business opportunity. The outsourcing free traders (otherwise known as fraudsters and crony lobbyists) want to make the government the business of last resort. Profits are guaranteed! Ask KBR and Halliburton shareholders.

War and prisons are now the source of "free trading" profits!

The war on terror is a con game played on the American people. It is a diversion or a cover up of their actions to grab more and more power and wealth.
