Spain: Over 1,000 gay couples wed

More than 1,000 same-sex couples have been married in Spain since last summer when the marriage equality law took effect, according to international news reports.

A high-ranking official in Spain's ruling Socialist Party, Pedro Zerolo, made the announcement Thursday.

Zerolo, who is gay and married, said that 800 same-sex marriage ceremonies have been performed, but the number only accounts for the country's civil registries that are computerized, which is about half.

"As of today, there should be more than 1,000 same-sex couples married and about the same number of applications going through," he said.
