AFTER EMERGING from the meeting, Bremer told reporters that the United States was not trying to dictate to the Iraqis a strategy to quicken the handover of authority.
“I’ll be taking them a message from the president that he remains steadfast in his determination to defeat terrorism in Iraq and steadfast in his determination to give Iraqis authority over their country,” he said.
Asked about reports that the United States was considering a number of steps to speed up the transfer of power to the Iraqis, Bremer said, “Let’s wait to see what decisions the (Iraqi) Governing Council makes (about the best way to proceed). Those will be their decisions.”
Bremer also played down reports that U.S. officials were growing increasingly frustrated with the Governing Council, saying the 25-member group installed by the United States was quietly making progress.

U.S. officials had said before the meeting that one option under consideration was naming a new interim Iraqi leader with authority to govern the country until a constitution can be written and elections held. That would be patterned after the model of Afghanistan.
The talks were held as an intelligence report warned that Iraqis are losing faith in U.S.-led occupation forces, a development that is increasing support for the resistance, officials said. Two senior U.S. officials said it describes a troubling picture of the political and security situation in Iraq
This is the part I like " one option under consideration was naming a new interim Iraqi leader with authority to govern the country until a constitution can be written and elections held." This is the third person who will have been in charge of Iraq since the invasion. First Garner, then Bremer and now ? . I wonder if they are once again considering installing Chalibi.
This just underscores the total ineptness of this admin. Pathetic.
