San Bernardino deputy to face charge in airman shooting
I hope this thug gets the MAX.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) - A sheriff's deputy who was videotaped shooting an unarmed Iraq War veteran after a car chase will be charged with attempted voluntary manslaughter, authorities said Tuesday.

The decision to charge Deputy Ivory J. Webb, 45, was announced by San Bernardino County District Attorney Michael A. Ramos.

Sheriff Gary Penrod said Webb will remain on paid administrative leave during the investigation into the shooting of Air Force Senior Airman Elio Carrion, 21.

It is the first time the county's prosecutors have filed charges against a lawman for an on-duty shooting.

``I respect the decision of the district attorney's office,'' Penrod said.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. Prosecutors in California say they will file an attempted voluntary manslaughter charge against a sheriff's deputy in the videotaped shooting of an unarmed airman after a high-speed chase.
The decision to charge Deputy Ivory Webb -- a former Iowa football player -- was announced today by the San Bernardino County district attorney.

Sheriff Gary Penrod says Webb will remain on paid administrative leave as the investigation continues into the January 29th shooting of Air Force Senior Airman Elio Carrion.

A grainy videotape shot by a resident shows Carrion on the ground just outside the car's passenger door and Webb standing nearby, pointing at gun at him. A voice appears to order Carrion to rise. When the airman appears to begin to comply, the deputy shoots him three times.

1. This is good news.....
I usually support the police because it is hard and dangerous job and decisions must be made in a split second...

However, in this case the officer gave the man orders to get on his feet and then shot him....

He committed a crime and must be charged with the crime...

that you have never been beaten, mishandled or robbed by a cop. This is why people like me call them pigs. I even had one in my family and he was a total asshole. Police are secret sadists and power-mnongers.

2. Took long enough....
Paid leave, eh? Well, innocent until proven guilty is the standard. I hope that if he is found responsible, they make him pay back the cash.

That guy gave cops a bad name.

3. ok, this is how it goes
after a trial and conviction, an appeal will 'discover' some 'clerical errors' that will result in him walking.

4. I saw it on TV
It was disgusting

Manslaughter is usually 2 to 6 years

I wonder what it is in CA.

7. I hope that the victim asks for the officer to be given probation

Which is not the same as asking the judge or jury to choose it in the absense of such a request

10. I thought he made it.
Didn't he survive this and isn't that why it's ATTEMPTED Voluntary Manslaughter rather than Voluntary Manslaughter?

16. Video saved the day
Edited on Tue Mar-07-06 03:31 PM by ImNotBuying
This just reinforces how important video is these days. Without the video (which with comments like "fuzzy" they wanted to try and make go away all the same) this would have just been another "justified" shooting and the victim would have been demonized and be most likely prosecuted knowing full well he did nothing to deserve getting shot. I don't think color had anything to do with it unless we're talking "blue" versus the rest of us.

Thats SOP for the police when they fuck up and shoot someone for no reason.

19. Cops lie about little things --
not surprising that they lie about murder.

They should be held to a higher standard -- because they are supposed to UPHOLD the law.

If I'm ever on a jury again -- I will automatically KNOW that the cop is lying.

30. In my experience,
cops are willing to lie about anything to save their own asses or to put an innocent person away. Cops are servants of the state. You think they are really out there to serve and protect you? Guess again, hint; free speech zones, etc.

26. And rarer yet that they actually get convicted.
Juries just hate to convict a cop. They won't do it even in the face of strong evidence.

33. The problem is getting them prosecuted and....
having the case heard before a jury, that rarely happens.

And even when that happens they are charged with a far lesser crime like in this case.

WTF does that have to do with anything relevant? Oh, I think I get it now. Since he was a football star, he can't be all that bad, eh? Probably the fault of the airman anyway. Nothing to see here folks, just move along.
