Congress to probe crime aboard cruise ships
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11442684/

Ahead of a House hearing Tuesday to tackle the issue of crime aboard cruise ships, a congressional memo details 177 sexual misconduct incidents, ranging from inappropriate touching to rape, and four robberies of amounts over $5,000 over a three-year period.

During that time, approximately 25 million people embarked on cruises from North America ports, the memo said.

Disclosure of the data, supplied by Holland America Lines, Royal Caribbean Cruises and others, is unusual because cruise lines are not required by law to publish comprehensive crime statistics and criminal law varies greatly on international waters.

Rep. Christopher Shays, R-Conn., wants to change that.

“I don’t have a comfort level that statistics from the cruise industry are accurate,” he said Saturday in a telephone interview. “I’ve never known statistics that are voluntary to be accurate.”

2. I'm glad we can have hearings on this, instead of those pesky torture
investigations or keeping our elections fair.

:sarcasm:

(directed at congress, not the OP)

5. why the h-ll isn't congress probing crimes by BUSH against humanity?
CHRISTOPHER SHAYS ... probing crimes aboard cruise ships is a distraction. DO YOU REALLY WANT TO PROBE CRIMES AND STOP THEM? PROBE BUSH AND HIS WHITE HOUSE AND HIS ILLEGAL INVASION AND OCCUPATION OF IRAQ, AND HIS PLAN TO GO AGAINST IRAN ..... that is where you need to go Mr. Shays, otherwise, just forget it and use our tax dollars to restore programs which have already been cut or are in danger of dying due to the Bushes fixation with tax cuts.

7. So would the taxpayers of the US
who know Congress has stolen a lot more for their corporate patrons.

Gotta look at crimes on the high seas or they might notice some in their own offices.

cruises. A cruise is one of the safest vacations a person can take. In room safes are provided for valuables. Security is tight in the ports so only passengers and crew are allowed aboard. It's always been my experience that crew members are helpful, friendly and well-supervised aboard ship. Any bad apples are promptly weeded out. The "crime" rate aboard ships, such as it is, is extremely low and probably much of it is alcohol-fueled by out-of-control passengers.

With all the crimes being perpetrated on the American people by the Bush crime family, surely Congress could better utilize its time and resources than by launching an investigation into a largely bogus non-issue such as this.
