BUENOS AIRES, Argentina, March 7 (Reuters) - Buenos Aires lawmakers ousted the mayor on Tuesday, ruling he failed to enforce safety codes that might have prevented a 2004 nightclub fire that killed 194 people.
A committee of Buenos Aires city deputies voted to sack Mayor Anibal Ibarra on charges of negligence and corruption that the victims' families blame for Argentina's worst tragedy in decades.
The impeachment trial of Ibarra, once viewed as a rising political star, deeply divided Argentines. Some saw the case as evidence politicians were finally being held accountable in a country where many complain leaders enjoy widespread impunity.
Others said it only highlighted the bare-knuckle style of Argentine politics.
