GOP Halts Paid Voter-Drive Program
Probes in Orange and San Bernardino counties spark suspension of signups using hired agents.
By Ashley Powers and Lynn Doan, Times Staff Writers
March 8, 2006

The California Republican Party has suspended its fee-based voter registration program while prosecutors in San Bernardino and Orange counties investigate possible registration fraud connected to private firms hired by the party, GOP officials said.

The suspension came after election officials in the two counties discovered thousands of flawed registration forms and received complaints from residents who said they had been improperly registered as Republicans.

Officials in both counties have turned over the forms to local prosecutors and contacted the California secretary of state.

The voter registration program, in which the GOP paid private contractors $3 for each new registration submitted, was credited with adding 750,000 Republican registrations to state voter rolls in the last three years.

3. Aren't San Bernadino and Orange Co. Republican?
I'm surprised they are investigating possible (probable) GOP criminal behavior.

4. Who was the GOP Conman who ran a private co. doing fraudulent
registration in a number of states back in 04? Sproul? Wonder if one of his groups was one of the hired companies that were caught in this round of fraud.

NATIONAL! The smoking gun on voter registration fraud: Nathan Sproul
by Bob Johnson
Wed Oct 13, 2004 at 01:28:21 AM PDT
Searching for information on the voter registration fraud stories breaking tonight in Nevada and Oregon, I kept coming across the same name: Nathan Sproul of Sproul & Associates in Phoenix, Arizona.

Nathan Sproul is the former head of the Arizona Republican Party and of the Arizona Christian Coalition (ah, the irony... a Christian).

Sproul is connected with the Republican National Committee-funded voter registration organization, Voter Outreach, Inc., a group that used paid registrars to register voters in a number of states including Nevada, Oregon, Arizona and perhaps more, including Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maine and Missouri. (Others states pending, particularly swing states.) Sproul's organization also recruited registrars by fraudulently telling recruits that they would be working for America Votes, a legitimate nonpartisan GOTV operation!

GOP Paid Firm Faces Voter Fraud Charge
By Laura Kurtzman
The San Jose Mercury News

Thursday 14 October 2004

Ex-worker says he saw Demos' forms trashed.
Democrats in Nevada charged in a lawsuit Wednesday that a company paid by the Republican National Committee destroyed voter-registration forms they had collected from Democratic voters.

Similar allegations have surfaced in Oregon and West Virginia, where the group has been active.

The Nevada allegations were reported Tuesday night by KLAS-TV in Las Vegas about Eric Russell, a former employee of the Republican-funded group, Voters Outreach of America, which also goes by the names America Votes and Project America Votes.

In an affidavit filed with the lawsuit, Russell said he was told to ask prospective voters, "Who would you vote for in the next election?" He said he was told to register only those who supported President Bush.

"I personally witnessed my supervisor at VOA, together with her personal assistant, destroy completed registration forms that VOA employees had collected," said Russell. "All of the destroyed registration forms were for registrants who indicated their party preference as 'Democrat.' "

Russell said he registered both Democrats and Republicans and, as a result, his pay was docked. According to the lawsuit against the Clark County Registrar of Voters, he provided copies of destroyed registration forms he retrieved from his supervisor's garbage can.

Russell repeated the allegations in a telephone interview Wednesday with the Mercury News.

GOP-Funded Outreach

Voters Outreach of America is run by Nathan Sproul, an Arizona GOP political consultant whose firm, Sproul & Associates, has been paid nearly $500,000 by the Republican National Committee to do voter outreach.

7. Calif. GOP Halts Voter Registration Plan
Calif. GOP Halts Voter Registration Plan
Calif. GOP Halts Practice of Paying People Who Sign Up New Voters Amid Fraud Probe
BERNARDINO, Calif. Mar 8, 2006 (AP)— The California Republican Party suspended its practice of paying people who sign up GOP voters while prosecutors investigate whether some registrations are improper.

"Having just one instance of voter fraud is too many," state party Chairman Duf Sundheim said in a statement Tuesday. "Any sign of voter fraud must be investigated and those responsible for the fraud should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law."

The state party paid workers $3 for each voter they registered as Republican a practice also followed by Democrats.

However, election officials in San Bernadino County found that thousands of GOP registration forms may have been filled out by the signature gatherers rather than the voter. Additionally, some non-citizens may have been registered, and some Democrats may have registered as Republicans. Similar problems were discovered in Orange County.
