Liberal group targets Dobson (Abramoff ties, Huge ad in NYT)

Focus on Family chief denies Abramoff ties
By Mike Soraghan
Denver Post Staff Writer

Washington - A liberal group plans to launch an advertising campaign Wednesday attacking Focus on the Family founder James Dobson for what it says are his ties to disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

The Campaign to Defend the Constitution says Dobson's opposition to an Indian casino in Louisiana helped competing tribal casinos that were represented by Abramoff, who has pleaded guilty to fraud and bribery.

Dobson has denied knowingly helping Abramoff, and Focus officials said some facts cited by the group are incorrect.

The campaign will feature radio and TV spots as well as an ad in The New York Times targeting Dobson along with Ralph Reed, former executive director of the Christian Coalition, and the Rev. Lou Sheldon, chairman of the Traditional Values Coalition. Details of the ads are to be released today.

3. "Officials said some facts are incorrect"
But oddly enough, they couldn't quite identify which facts might be incorrect, and the overall message, that Mr. Morality James Dobson is working to support casinos and gambling. Looks like a new exhibit in the William Bennett Wing of the Conservative Hypocrite Hall of Fame is getting ready for its opening.

4. Crafty wordsmiths indeed
But the base will lap it up. But it sounds like an admission of guilt to me. I guess I'm just skeptical. God made me that way mr dobson.

I recall a "news" story on their radio network which stated: New information may have been discovered which may indicate that Michael Schiavo abused his wife. Dontcha know their flock ran with that.

5. Fundie newsletters this week: God approves of Gambling, new
Edited on Wed Mar-08-06 10:35 AM by BR_Parkway
revelation passed along to Dobson in a dream

Proverbs 16:33 The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the LORD.

See, the Scripture doesn't say don't gamble, is says you pray to Him for winnings and don't forget to tithe your 10%.

Wish such spiritual foresight, Daddy Dobson was able to divine God's own true will years ago to help that fine upstanding Christian Warrior, Ralph Reed in his most Holy mission. Following years of prayerful consideration, Dobson has now decided that God wants him to finally share this message with you, previously you just weren't at the place in your Spiritual growth to be able to handle it the way that God intended.

Now, libruls are once again attacking this most Holy practice and OmniPotent God needs your spare change in the couch cushions to make sure that those evil libruls don't win. Please make your tax deductible gift out to Focus on the Family.....

Damn, you couldn't tell I grew up in the church from that, huh? :sarcasm:

10. Actually, there is a passage near the beginning of the book of Acts
where the remaining apostles "cast lots" to determine who would replace Judas Iscariot, who had committed suicide.

13. Yeah, but there's a difference
between "winning" a leadership position in a new religion that would soon be facing persecution, and winning at the roulette wheel. There's gambling...and then there's gambling.

And then there's Abramoff

14. Oh, I agree
I just bring that up to illustrate that some xtian groups condeming gambling is just a bit hypocritical. If they use the bible to support their position that gambling is a sin, well, what about the apostles?

Wouldn't it be marvelous to take down the entire facade!

The Post reported that Abramoff paid no less than $4 million to Reed -- currently a candidate for lieutenant governor of Georgia -- to solicit the involvement of Christian right leaders in a series of schemes to ward off competition from Abramoff's Indian casino clients. During the Focus on the Family broadcast, Dobson and Minnery denied that their involvement in the campaign to stop the expansion of the casinos of competitors to Abramoff's clients was in any way solicited or manipulated by Abramoff or Reed.

20. HAHAHAHAHAHAH
:yourock:

In the early Eighties I used to go with friends to Rangers hockey games at the Garden when the Islanders and Denis Potvin came to play. The chant "beat your wife Potvin, beat your wife" rang out from the rafters whenever his picture was displayed on the Jumbotronbecause he decided his wife was a punching bag. They still do it when he shows up at Old Time Hockey games (he retired in '88). He was a sanctimonius asshat, Just like these Fundies.

9. Dobson can't be guilty of this.
He's too busy helping people prevent their pre-homosexual five-year-old boys from becoming sissies and growing up to be gay. And we know that energy independence, war, global warming, etc are not the biggest threat to this country: gay marriage is. :sarcasm:

11. Dobson is a coward who likes to strike from behind the scenes. Expose him.
The last thing that sissie-coward James Dobson wants is public scrutiny, media scrutiny and legal scrutiny of his shady operations.

Every little bit of sunlight that touches this coward/bully is a good thing.

Here's hoping the ads are funded and that they are relentless.

12. I don't understand why they excluded,
Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson. In emails from Reed, to Robertson Reed mentions Falwell and includes the phone script for the calls to the target audience.

Falwell and Robertson are just as involved as the rest of them. Also I should mention the Eagle Forum, and the Texas christian coalition as well were a big part of this scheme.

15. Dobson is Sick
You can read Dobson's description in one of his recent books about how he repeatedly beat his dachshund dog with a belt for sitting on the couch. The description was supposed to provide a lesson in child rearing for the general public.

16. Sign their petition here! See the print and TV ads here!
http://www.defconamerica.org/

Send them this letter. Tell them to practice what they preach.

TEXT OF THE LETTER TO THE RELIGIOUS RIGHT LEADERS

Dear Mr. Reed, Rev. Sheldon and Mr. Dobson,

For years, you've attacked the freedom of women to control their own bodies, waged war on gay marriage, and fought to erode one of the most central tenets of our Constitution: the separation between church and state.

You've always claimed the moral high ground, asserting the right to tell people how to live and condemning millions of Americans for actions you deemed immoral. But your high ground is washed away. After years of condemning gambling as a social ill, you're caught knee-deep in pro-gambling campaigns hatched by indicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

It's time to stop telling others how to act, and start practicing what you preach.

End your hypocrisy.

Sincerely,

21. I saw the page add in the NYT today.
I think they may have been better off trying to put it in some western and southern newspapers where it would ruffle many more feathers.
