Carter Urges Troop Withdrawal From Iraq

SEATTLE - Former President Jimmy Carter criticized the war in Iraq on Wednesday, urging a troop drawdown as the United States enters its fourth year of conflict in Iraq.

"It was a completely unnecessary war. It was an unjust war," said Carter, the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize winner. "It was initiated on the basis of false pretenses. All of those are true, but we can't just pre-emptively withdraw."

He urged the Bush administration to bring home as many troops as possible within the next 12 months.

"The violence is increasing monthly," Carter said. "My prayer is we'll see some kind of democracy eventually evolve."

4. Jimmy Carter made me interested in politics..

when I was young, I was like my dad..I didn't trust any politicians, and I liked voting even less. But Jimmy Carter made me listen at an early age..before I was old enough to vote!

Jimmy Carter was one of the few office holders who didn't consistently try to pull my leg, who demonstrated the ability to link facts with necessary action, and who always worked to leave this world in better shape than how he found it. Whenever Carter makes a speech or an endorsement in the primary, I pay attention!

We invaded Iraq "pre-emptively". Why can't we leave the same way?

Maybe it's the preferred Demo political koan...it certainly crashes my brain whenever I hear it, whether from Kerry, Clark or Carter.

I also believe the USA should rebuild every fucking thing it demolished in Iraq. But I want the troops out yesterday.
