No room at the inn for New Orleans dog search team
NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- One of three canine search-and-rescue teams trained to look for bodies left by Hurricane Katrina plans to leave New Orleans after just a few days on the job, because there won't be a hotel room to stay in, the men said Wednesday.

Game wardens Wayde Carter and Roger Guay said Louisiana apparently didn't make the proper arrangements with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to guarantee them housing after Thursday night, and their supervisor, Maj. Greg Sanborn, has called them back to Maine.

The wardens were to stay in New Orleans until March 21.

Carter and Guay, on loan from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, arrived in Louisiana from Maine late last week.

On Sunday, their search dogs led firefighters to a man's body in the attic of a house in the flood-swept Lakeview neighborhood. It was the first such discovery in five days of a new hunt for victims.

These guys and their dogs are actually finding bodies - so they have to leave? Hmmmmmmm

1. Oh that FEMA!
They are such a compassionate, highly trained organization. I'm just swelling with pride. :sarcasm:

<snip>Under Louisiana's contract with FEMA, the search teams also were to have access to a veterinarian in case their dogs were injured. That promise hasn't been kept, either, Carter and Guay told CNN. <snip>

It's unbelievable that they are incapable of making a few simple arrangements. Why is this area being neglected? It's incomprehensible!

6. Maybe they couldn't find
a Republican veterinarian Bush donor who was willing to charge FEMA $5000 or so per checkup for each dog.

10. Hard to tell what really happened
There are a lot of mis-conceptions about working dogs. Back when they started the TSA at airports, the TSA scheduled dogs to work in 8 hour shifts and then were shocked to find out that sniffing dogs can only work 2 shifts of 30 to 45 minutes per day. So I think there is some chance that FEMA just screwed this up. And of course there is also the possibility that this is just an excuse for FEMA to do as little as possible.

22. And Chertoff says he'll be on top of bird flu.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x2156622

Chertoff: Bird flu possible in U.S. within months
But, he says, 'We're going to be able to deal with it'

...Chertoff attempted to reassure the public by saying the federal government has experience in dealing with such outbreaks....

Need I remind people, the government also had experience dealing with hurricanes.

4. I just saw on CNN
that the State is supposed to have authorize FEMA to give these teams a place to stay. Of course, this was news to the State who said that has never been the case before. :eyes: It never stops.

7. So what NEW idiot is running FEMA these days?
I know they blame everything on Brownie, but he's been GONE for a long time!!!

It keeps looking more and more like Brownie was right. Chertoff DOES treat FEMA like a step child and really doesn't GAS!

I know when I heard this on CNN this AM, I couldn't believe this agency was screwing uo AGAIN!

Every job I've ever had, when you make a mistake, the one thing you ALWAYS fo is to make absolutely sure you don't DO IT AGAIN! Especially with the same customer (New Orleans)!

What's WRONG with these people?????

13. The States need a figure a way to cut their ties with FEMA...
and get the money directly.

FEMA is intentionally interfering and delaying any progress in the Gulf!! They are a fraud at this stage...

Each state in the Union needs to cut their ties with FEMA.

I don't know if it's possible....

i like that and get the money directly that is cute and you know what a lot of people prob. think that

did you know that FEMA is actually billing the state of louisiana for its "services"?

we simply don't have the money

we got a bill for $150 MILLION the other day, last i hear blanco just tore it up and threw in the trash, hey, can't get blood from a turnip

you know if louisiana seceded from the union, 80 percent of usa oil is drilled, refined, or shipped through louisiana, we could get the royalties from our own oil, and we'd go from being a poor state to a rich nation

are you ready for another civil war? because blanco has already fired the first guns over the bow and said there will be NO more offshore oil leases offshore louisiana if we don't get our coastal restoration money

it's lookin to me like * has realized that faced w. civil war -- against one of the states that provide many of the volunteers and training for our armed services -- or just forking over the cash, he's gonna have to start making w. some cash

but only time will tell if he follows thru on his promises of the day

just keep in mind, when you advise cutting our ties w. our federal authorities, there's a process for doing it, it's called civil war

and this time we'll win because we got the oil and the refineries and the chemical plants

won't get fooled again indeed

17. We have your back....
Blanco is fighting for the state...and it's people...

I think * is lying and just like all of his promises he will bail on this one....

Civil War...not so crazy....anymore....

Fema is billing LA for their services.....if they can bill for the services LA should be able to sue for breach of contract...I...have....to stop....using....logic....

I gotta feeling there are many states in the union that will be backing La on this one.....

When the dems take over in Nov I can't wait to see the auditing of this Fiasco Fema....

20. This is the same rejection of help that went on in the beginning.
...Carter and Guay, on loan from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, arrived in Louisiana from Maine late last week...

People travelled from Maine to help the people of New Orleans, and FEMA can't provide housing for them, so they are leaving without providing the services they intended.

This has been going on since the beginning.

There is not a room at any hotel or volunteer camp, or even in campgrounds, anywhere within the Katrina strike zone during the month of March. Between college students coming down to volunteer and construction crews (rebuilding businesses, mostly), absolutely everything is booked up.

The real tragedy here is that it took these guys six months to get down here with the dogs to do the body searches. I was in New Orleans in November, with access to every part of the city. There were plenty of hotel rooms and relief camps for them to stay in. But where were they then?

23. People gave every agency they could contact the EXACT address...
of one of their relatives who died and was left behind on a roof so she could be easily retrieved.

It still took months and months.
