Two U.S. Marines Die in Action in Iraq, Military Says
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000103&sid=aZG5uVzyFhmE&refer=us

March 9 (Bloomberg) -- Two U.S. Marines died in action in the western Iraqi province of al-Anbar, the American military said in an e-mailed statement.

A Marine, assigned to the 1st Marine Logistics Group, died on March 7 due to ``enemy action,'' the statement said. Another Marine, assigned to the same force, died yesterday in a battle in the area. The military didn't give other details.

U.S.-led and Iraqi troops are struggling to contain an insurgency that is trying to destabilize the Iraqi government and force the foreign military out by staging attacks on soldiers, Iraqi government workers and civilians.

At least 2,304 U.S. service members and seven civilian Department of Defense workers have died in Iraq since the March 2003 invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein, according to a tally from the department on March 7.

2. Today's number is 2,305, according to the site linked below.
Yesterday the number was 2,303. It rises almost every day by at least one or two. It saddens me so much. When you think about the actual number of people affected by these premature and unnecessary deaths, you'd need to multiply that number by at least 25, considering family and friends.
The number of wounded listed at the site today is 16,653, and we know how severe some of these injuries are.
I want my country back, and I want all of its citizens returned home to their families and friends.

6. HOW MANY MORE GEORGIE, HOW MANY MORE?

WHEN A SOLDIER MAKES IT HOME

Halfway around the world tonight
In a strange and foreign land
A soldier packs his memories
As he leaves Afghanistan
And back home they don't know too much
There's just no way to tell
I guess you had to be there
For to know that war was hell

And there won't be any victory parades
For those that's coming back
They'll fly them in at midnight
And unload the body sacks
And the living will be walking down
A long and lonely road
Because nobody seems to care these days
When a soldier makes it home

They'll say it wasn't easy
Just another job well done
As the government in Kabul falls
To the sounds of rebel guns
And the faces of the comrades
Being blown out of the sky
Leaves you bitter with the feeling
That they didn't have to die

Halfway around the world tonight
In a strange and foreign land
A soldier unpacks memories
That he saved from Vietnam
Back home they didn't know too much
There was just no way to tell
I guess you had to be there
For to know that war was hell

And there wasn't any big parades
For those that made it back
They flew them in at midnight
And unloaded all the sacks
And the living were left walking down
A long and lonely road
Because nobody seemed to care back then
When a soldier made it home

The night is coming quickly
And the stars are on their way
As I stare into the evening
Looking for the words to say
That I saw the lonely soldier
Just a boy that's far from home
And I saw that I was just like him
While upon this earth I roam

And there may not be any big parades
If I ever make it back
As I come home under cover
Through a world that can't keep track
Of the heroes who have fallen
Let alone the ones who won't
Which is why nobody seems to care
When a soldier makes it home

-Arlo Guthrie

9. Stack two more on the pile, 'eh?
Edited on Thu Mar-09-06 10:30 AM by 0007

Grass Bush

Pile the bodies high in Austerlitz and Waterloo Iraq
Shovel them under and let me work--
I am the grass; bush; I cover all.

And pile them high in Gettyburg Baghdad
And pile them high in Ypres and Vedum Mossoul and al-Anbar

Two years, ten years, and passengers ask the conductor:
What place is this?

I am the grass bush.
Let me work.

10. Child-abuse, yeah, child-abuse yeah, Everywhere is war.

Until the philosophy,
Which holds one race superior
And another inferior,
Is finally and permanently
Discredited and abandoned,
Everywhere is war.

WAR

Until there is no longer first class
Or second class citizens of any nation.
Until the color of a man's skin,
Is of no more significance than
The color of his eyes,
I've got to say "war".

WAR

That until the basic human rights,
Are equally guaranteed to all,
Without regard to race,
I'll say "war"

Until that day the dream of lasting peace,
World-citizenship and the rule of
International morality will remain
Just a fleeting illusion to be pursued,
But never obtained.
And everywhere is war.

Until the ignoble and unhappy regime
Which holds all of us through,
Child-abuse, yeah, child-abuse yeah,
Sub-human bondage has been toppled,
Utterly destroyed,
Everywhere is war.

War in the east,
War in the west,
War up north,
War down south,
There is war,
And the rumors of war.

Until that day,
the african continent will know no peace
There is no continent,
Which will know peace.

Children, children.

Fight!

We find it necessary.
We know we will win.
We have confidence in the victory
Of good over evil
Of good over evil

Fight the real enemy!

16. It's not an "isurgency," it's a "resistance movement."
Maybe if we started using the correct terms, we might have a better understanding of what's going on.

Along those lines, the 4 killed in Falluja in April, 2004 were not "contractors," they were "mercenaries."

20. Given your tag, I'm sure you're also looking forward
to the "LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL." :)

I swear to God, I heard Richard Myers actually use that phrase a few months ago, before he was replaced by Peter Pace. My jaw dropped open a mile wide at this Westmoreland-esque fit of deja-entendu.

23. Carter urges troop withdrawal from Iraq
SEATTLE -- Former President Jimmy Carter criticized the war in Iraq on Wednesday, urging a troop drawdown as the United States enters its fourth year of conflict in Iraq.

"It was a completely unnecessary war. It was an unjust war," said Carter, the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize winner. "It was initiated on the basis of false pretenses. All of those are true, but we can't just pre-emptively withdraw."

He urged the Bush administration to bring home as many troops as possible within the next 12 months.
