Bush position on Dubai ports unchanged: W.House

Mar 9, 2006 — WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush, who has threatened to veto legislation blocking the Dubai ports deal, has not changed his position, the White House said on Thursday.

"The president's position remains the same," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said.

He said the White House supported reforming the process that approves such deals and was continuing to work with Congress, where Republicans have criticized the Dubai Ports World deal.

"We support improving and reforming the CFIUS process and so we're engaging congressional leaders on that important issue and we're looking at ideas," McClellan said.

Bush to the hilt on this. I've read through several threads over the past couple weeks on this issue and I'd guess it's about 50-50. Looks a lot like the Harriet Miers fiasco. There really is a core group of some 25% (who knows what the real number is) of the voting population who would support Bush under any, any, any circumstances. This might actually make Republicans problem worse--it guarantees division for the mid-terms rather than giving House and Senate Republicans the cover they need to truly break from the president.

Nothing would please me more than Bush trying to over-ride Repug veto...then having HIS veto over-ridden by same Repugs. It's about time (once at least) Chimpy does NOT get 'his way.' Most "adults" experience that at least ONCE in their lives.

Given that most of same Repugs are most probably also on "Abramoff's list"...seems they have to choose between which threat and/or sanction will hurt their political future (or future prison life) the least.

10. Mid term strategy,

Too many people are really fed up with the Republican led Congress. They've become disillusioned and have become viewed as a rubber stamp for the administration. They know they're in jeopardy of losing control come November.

Take this for what it is. It's a tactic to show the people that they're not the rubber stamp many of think they are. You can bet your bottom dollar there will be an agreement made that will table this deal until after the elections. Once that's done if the R's remain in control this will be on the President's desk the day after the elections.
