Jupiter lawyer mulls Harris fight for GOP Senate nod (FL)

TALLAHASSEE — Tom Rooney, whose family owns the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers, said Wednesday he probably will enter the U.S. Senate race against Katherine Harris in the GOP primary.

Rooney, a Jupiter attorney, said "extremely influential Republicans" approached him two weeks ago and urged him to consider challenging Harris. Rooney declined to name those who have been encouraging him. He said he will make a final decision about entering the race in the next two weeks.

"I'm extremely serious about this right now," Rooney told The Palm Beach Post, adding that he is likely to get in the race, "barring something personal happening."

Rooney said he has talked to Republicans in Tallahassee and at the National Republican Senatorial Committee. Rooney described them as "supportive." A Republican working with the committee confirmed that Rooney has been speaking with Republicans in Washington and he is not being discouraged from exploring the race.
