Murtha to Receive Profile in Courage Award

The Associated Press

Rep. John Murtha, a Vietnam veteran who has denounced the war in Iraq, was named a recipient of the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award on Thursday.

Alberto Mora, a former Navy general counsel who warned Pentagon officials that U.S. policies dealing with terror detainees could invite abuse, also will receive the award from the John Fitzgerald Kennedy Library Foundation.

Murtha, a Pennsylvania Democrat, was recognized "for the difficult and courageous decision of conscience he made in November 2005, when he reversed his support for the Iraq war and called for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from the conflict," the foundation said in a statement.

Mora was honored for "waging a 2 1/2-year behind-the-scenes battle with Pentagon brass and civilian leaders over U.S. military policy regarding the treatment of detainees held by the United States as part of the war on terror," the foundation said.

"deserving" his purple hearts.

An "ethics" investigation of Murtha by the House? Is the pot trying to call the kettle black? That's one more pathetic strategem that will blow up in their faces.

http://www.bandofbrothers2006.org/ http://www.shockedandawful.com/

In response to the Swift-Boat attack on Rep. Murtha, Band of Brothers 2006, along with VETPAC, has organized an event to take place on February 8, 2006... Not since 1946 have so many veterans come together as candidates for one political party. We already have commitments from over half of our candidates to come to Washington D.C., rally around Rep. Murtha, and lay the groundwork for a populist reform movement that will oust the integrity-challenged GOP leadership in our Congress. We will release more details about the upcoming event in the days to come and hope that many of you will be able to attend.

Response to the Attacks on Rep. Murtha

We’re all aware of the recent attacks on Rep. John P.Murtha’s (D-PA) war record as reported in the Washington Post. Band of Brothers has been chartered on the very principle that’s under siege here: that veterans who served this country diligently should not have their war records questioned and attacked by partisan entities through the press without a watchdog ready to bite them back when they’re out of line...

Murtha: Situation in Iraq is a CIVIL war - Global war on terrorism, a 'myth
Rep. John Murtha 01.12.2006 Situation in Iraq Is Civil War
According to the Random House Unabridged Dictionary, Second Edition, the definition of a civil war is a "war between political factions or regions within the same country." That is exactly what is going on in Iraq, not a global war on terrorism, as the President continues to portray it. 93 percent of those fighting in Iraq are Iraqis. A very small percentage of the fighting is being done by foreign fighters. Our troops are caught in between the fighting. 80 percent of Iraqis want us out of there and 45 percent think it is justified to kill American troops.

Murtha To Military: Don't Blame Me WASHINGTON, Jan. 6, 2006 Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa. (AP)Quote"Peter Pace told me this last night: They know militarily they can't win this." (AP) Rep. John Murtha says the military is blaming him for a recruitment slump instead of recognizing mistakes that have led to an enlistment shortage.

=I'm writing today to thank you for your essential support last week in our efforts to push Congress to have an honest debate about Iraq. Last week we were honored to have Congressman Murtha speak to our DCCC members. His call for an honest debate on Iraq, a call you joined, has already garnered more support from our members than any other campaign we've launched this year. Thank you for helping make that possible.

That is absolutely BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!

...The award, created in 1989 and named for Kennedy's Pulitzer Prize-winning book, is presented annually to public servants who have withstood strong opposition while fighting for their beliefs.

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy and Caroline Kennedy, the late president's daughter, will present the awards May 22 at the library.

Murtha and Mora "exemplify the kind of courage my father admired most," Caroline Kennedy said in a statement.

Past recipients include President Ford, Ukraine President Viktor Yushchenko and Sens. John McCain and Russell Feingold.

20. and his critics in both parties deserve the Chicken Shit Award!
I expected the Republicans to chide Murtha for saying that there was nothing more we could do in Iraq except bring the troops home. I was expecting the usual DINOs to join the Republicans in criticizing Murtha. I was surprised to see how quickly some Democratic Presidential wannabes turned on Murtha, such as Hillary and Biden. Shame on all of them!

While we are at it, the people that truly deserve the Profile in Courage Award are those members of the House and the Senate that had the balls to vote against PATRIOT and against IWR. Had the majority voted with them, we would have 2,300 GIs alive today, not to mention the tens of thousands dead and wounded in this criminal war.

21. Bush considered the war vote a formality.
He felt he had authority to invade Iraq under original UN resolutions. He would have invaded with or without "support" - further he wouldn't have taken the vote to the floor without political pressure. Additionally, the FISA debacle should prove to us that * doesn't give a rats ass about laws. * does what he wants regardless of what he considers "legal formality."

However, since we are on the subject of being responsible for our votes, let's talk about the people who wasted THEIR votes NOT supporting for the only person with a chance in hell to beat W. Florida came down to 500 so called votes almost 100k so called progressives in that state voted for Nader instead of Gore. Are they at all accountable?

25. I live in Indiana
not in Florida. Besides, we are talking about 2004, and many people worked to get Kerry elected despite our own misgivings about the man. Ohio was stolen. Kerry through the towell. Green sued.

There is plenty of blame to go around. I did my bit to help Democrats, and we got our candidates elected. Indianapolis went for Kerry, but because of the undemocratic Electoral College, our votes did not amount to anything.

How come the Democratic Party does not support electoral reform?

28. The Democratic Party does support electoral reform.
Just not the kind of reform that will help dismantle it.

And, regarding your that was soooo 2000 statement, how come Greens are to be "forgiven" their misjudgment, while Democrats are held to perfection when it comes to voting? Democrats KNEW what Bush was capable of, we told you so. Nader on the other hand said Bush was = to Gore. Can I ask where your disdain for Mr. Nader is? How are you holding him accountable as your candidate in 2000?

34. Since I live in Indiana, the Presidential vote was inconsequential
Voting for Nader in 2000 as a write-in protest, while voting for Democratic candidates for Senate and Governor (both of which won) does not a Green make.

If anyone should do penance are the ass holes that push for a moderate Republican agenda to supplant traditional Democratic values, people like A From and his flunkies for example.

BTW, Gore did win Florida!

How many Senators supported the Black Caucus in challenging the Florida electors?

Why did Lieberman through in the towel on military ballots cast after election day?

oSenatorexplain how come so many voters that voted

INDIANA

Bush, George W., 1,245,836, 56.65%

Gore, Al, 901,980, 41.01%

Nader, Ralph, 18,531, 0.84%

While are you at it with your cheap Green-bashing, how about picking on those that voted for Moorehead in Florida? or Browne?

Or how about the Democratic party leaders' failure to call for a federal probe on the stopping of the ballot counting in Miami-Dade by a group of Republican operatives and Congressional staffers?

Shame on you for insulting all those that worked their tails off for Kerry in 2004 despite their own misgivings about him. So much for ABB in 2004.

You won't get another ABB again. If you think people will vote for any "D" candidate that goes against their core values (abortion rights, LGBT rights, bring the troops home), think again!

I don't expect all Democrats to agree with me on every issue but it sure must be nice to belong to a party that doesn't have one vote on the record ey? Can't criticize a voting record if it doesn't exist. However one can hold party leaders accountable for their words/deeds no? I've yet to see most of the Greens here who criticize dems say a damn thing about Nader. Why do you suppose that is?

Shame on YOU for not holding your party accountable for it's role in anything.

I suggest cleaning your own house before telling me how dirty mine is - deal?

36. I am not Green, so shove it!
My one write-in vote for Nader, which amounted to 0.84% of the Indiana vote, while voting for Evan Bayh for Senate and Frank O'Bannon for Governor (both Democrats) do not make me a Green.

I am Green on the issues and totally against the war, PATRIOT, and the Bush dictatorship in all its aspects, and I also oppose those that continue to enable Bush by voting for PATRIOT extension, and giving him authority to do what he wants against Syria and Iran.

until next year or later, when the truth comes out and shows how she not only put her career on the line, but her and her family's life on the line to help save our country. Hopefully then our system will have recovered enough to recognize folks like her, Russell Tice, and other whistleblowers who still have their courage not be recognized.
