Senate panel OKs video game study.
http://news.com.com/Senate+panel+OKs+video+game+study/2100-1047_3-6047750.html

<snip>

Democrats Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut, Hillary Clinton of New York and Dick Durbin of Illinois persuaded a Senate committee to approve a sweeping study of the "impact of electronic media use" to be organized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC.

</snip>

<snip>

"Down the road when--if there is some sort of finding that there is harm in this--then we're going to see calls to regulate speech because of the potential harm," said Marv Johnson, legislative counsel to the American Civil Liberties Union. "That's where there's going to be a problem."

</snip>

Just so we all know what the CDC is going to be spending $90 million on.

1. hey, it's not like the CDC has anything more important
to spend that money on.

Wait, we haven't cured cancer, AIDS, or Diabetes yet? We can't realistically treat paralysis? We can't even prevent tooth decay?

uh...er...nevermind then.

3. what a waste
and people wonder why the dems never seem to be able to get anywhere these days.

It's because of 'leadership' like this.

4. This is such crap
http://www.gamerevolution.com/oldsite/articles/violence/violence.htm

Violent trends have been going DOWN, even though there has been an increase in violent games.

Any Dem should be ASHAMED to have their name associated with this.

6. Perception is what counts to politicians
Edited on Thu Mar-09-06 06:39 PM by 0rganism
It doesn't matter whether rates of social violence are really going down, as long as voters are more concerned by simulated violence than some other credible issue on which the politicians would otherwise be staking out turf.

If I blame the Dems for anything on this front, it's for reacting to opinion rather than leading it.

5. Right, because videogame violence is FAR more serious
than frivolous issues like bullying and bad parenting and is FAR more likely to incite violence than hate-radio people like Coulter and Limbaugh actually telling listeners to go out and kill political opponents
extreme :sarcasm:

9. Great...
I'm so glad these Senators know how to raise my children better then I do. :eyes:

Congress does jack squat all year and this is what they want to spend money on now?! The whole lot of them need to go.

FYI; The culprits who co-sponsored the bill are Senators Joseph Lieberman and Hillary Clinton from New York, Sam Brownback of Kansas, Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, Richard Durbin of Illinois, and Evan Bayh of Indiana.

11. Fact about Clinton and Santorum:
Edited on Thu Mar-09-06 07:39 PM by aden_nak
They are the top two contribution recipients from the TV/Movie/Music industry. There's a distinct pattern amongst politicians who take contributions from those PACs and lobbyists of sponsoring video game related legislation. The primary factor there is that the 18-34 year old male market is consuming less media and playing more games, and it's really putting a crimp in their advertising numbers.

Hillary needs to stop playing to the center if she really is serious about 2008. It didn't work for Dukakis, it didn't work for Gore, it didn't work for Kerry, and it won't work for her.
