Sen. Leahy Gets Canadian Border Fence Idea Scrapped
From the Caledonian-Record, St Johnsbury, VT: http://www.caledonianrecord.com/pages/top_news/story/9e2e9849c

DERBY LINE, VERMONT
The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee has eliminated what U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont called a "cockamamie" plan to consider building a fence or wall along the U.S.-Canadian border.

Leahy said Thursday the proposal to study such a barrier along the world's longest unguarded border was stripped from pending U.S. Homeland Security legislation by U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., at the request of Leahy and others.

Leahy said he is still working to stop another regulation that Vermont business people say will practically shut down commerce with Canada. At the end of next year, Homeland Security will require Americans and legal immigrants traveling by land to Canada to have a special ID card or a passport to get back into the U.S.

I guess they're going to have to find another way to keep us in.

that is so fucked up. How about they work on securing the ports first. And quit fucking spying on peace groups and animal rights groups. What a fucking waste of our money! :argh:

31. Agreed....
They steal and waste our tax payer money and they don't care about what's coming into the Ports...I swear these "fences" are intended to keep in, not keep out....

4. This is so retarded.
What about those of us who live in states that have more roads going to Canada than into the US? Any locking down of the US/Canada border will *DEVATSTATE* the Maine economy!

6. Amusingly enough
Derby Line, the town the story was posted from, has a wonderful old Opera House that's half in Canada and half in the US. The border is a painted line IN the theatre. Hard to imagine a wall there.

20. I imagine a nice fence along the Niagara River and all of the Great Lakes
would be sooooo effective and benificial.

I'm sure all those folks along the border will welcome this with open arms.

Geesh - it's not a barren desert wasteland like Texas, Arizon, New Mexico Borders!

8. Do the backers of the fence actually know anything about the Cdn border?
There is no way in hell that we could build a fence along that border, never mind actually maintain or patrol it. What are we going to do with the Great Lakes build a nice little floating fence?

As though we actually have any money left to spend on something as stupid as this. We're bleeding money so fast I'm really starting to worry that we'll never be able to get it under control. And the republicans claim the title conservatism, what a bunch of fuck-ups, at every level of Government.

13. maybe it's Georgie's new job creation plan!
You know -- to make up for the ones being outsourced to India. He can just hire a bunch of "border guards" to stand (or sit in a rowboat) every 50 feet or so along the US-Canadian border. A couple of million new jobs, bingo!

17. Outsource it to the Chinese. They built the Great Wall of China.
What a ridiculous waste of money and infringement of rights that would be. Good for Leahy.

They are the ONLY company "capable" of doing such a thing, after all, right?!

24. They are the only company in the U.S.A.
Seems that way. Everytime the government wants to part with a lot of money, they throw it in Halliburton's direction.

Even if Halliburton was an honest company (stretch your imagination), it just wouldn't be right to give every contract to the same company.

Something about putting all your eggs in one basket.

actually being submitted in Congress?

If so, it's just as ridiculous as the idea for a Canadian wall.

23. The Southern Locals Want Their Border Closed
Edited on Fri Mar-10-06 07:35 PM by Demeter
But we cosmopolitan Northerners know that our neighbor is our friend, and we want to be able to cross over if George manages to start the Apocalypse in the US.

25. Halliburton build fences now or something?
"Homeland Security was asked to look at the feasibility of barriers on the Canadian border and on the nation's shorelines."

------

Shorelines? I suppose it will cut down on the increasing number of terrorists swimming across the Atlantic and Pacific or something. But what the hell, throw a couple billion at this and hope bin Laden and his pals haven't discovered boltcutters yet.

of the Alberta oil sands.
