Carlyle Forms Infrastructure Investment Team [investment in US ports]

NEW YORK, March 10 (Reuters) - Carlyle Group, a private equity group, said on Friday it was setting up an infrastructure investment team focused on investing in projects in the United States.

The initial team of eight will be co-headed by Robert Dove, former executive vice president at Bechtel Enterprises, and Barry Gold, former managing director and co-head of the structured finance group at Citigroup/Salomon Smith Barney.

Carlyle said the team begins work next Monday and will look at investing in transportation and water facilities, airports, bridges, ports, stadiums and other public infrastructure.

"The proven use of public-private partnerships and concessions in the UK and on continental Europe is now emerging as a means of financing U.S. infrastructure," said Dove in statement.

Carlyle said its infrastructure team will invest mainly in U.S. infrastructure in deals ranging from $100 million to more than $1 billion.

The team will engage in public-private partnerships with governments at all levels as well as purchase projects outright or through long term concessions.

Gee, could this have something to do with that "US entity" DPW was speaking of yesterday?

48. Dubai put some capital into Carlisle's previous $8 billion investment
http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0603/10/ldt.01.html

DOBBS: For those who keep track of Halliburton and The Carlisle Group, by the way, today "The Wall Street Journal" in its editorial pages noted it would like to see Halliburton buy the U.S. port operations from Dubai, a sense, if you will, of perverse humor.

The Carlisle Group, by the way, today, if you do follow things like The Carlisle Group and Halliburton, said it plans to raise a billion-dollar fund to buy, guess what, U.S. infrastructure, including ports. Dubai has already put some capital into Carlisle's previous $8 billion investment fund.

24. Mark my words -- Carlyle would / will own the whole damn world
if we let them. (We = people of the world.) In my heart I know this is the very heart of international/global/corporatist fascism.

It is a PRIVATE equity firm which answers to no one but its own investors. There are few laws (that I know of) anywhere in the world that govern it. It's NOT a corporation, and it's not publicly traded, so none of the U.S. laws re corporations or stock, etc., apply.

In time, they WILL own everything -- they and their various friends, of which Halliburton would be one, for example. And they'll be dictating terms to all the world's governments to a much greater extent than the global corporations of the world are already doing.

For some reason RUBENSTEIN has been more of a boon to the Poppy BUSHes than to fellow Dems. Other vipers from CARTER's breast: Tweety and Pat CADDELL, both of whom continue to USE the Dem label while bashing real Dems mercilessly. CADDELL does it under the guise of purer-than-thou. His only victory was with CARTER. Every candidate and other activity since then went down the drain, including New Coke.

20. UAE invests in Carlyle---ooh, I'm so surprised. Here's a link
Edited on Fri Mar-10-06 03:00 PM by wordpix2
DOBBS: President Bush's family and members of the Bush administration have long-standing business connections with the United Arab Emirates, and those connections are raising new concerns and questions tonight in some quarters about why the president is defying his very own party leadership and his party in defending the Dubai port deal.

CHRISTINE ROMANS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice over): The oil-rich United Arab Emirates is a major investor in The Carlyle Group, the private equity investment firm where President Bush's father once served as senior adviser and is a who's who of former high-level government officials. Just last year, Dubai International Capital, a government-backed buyout firm, invested in an $8 billion Carlyle fund. Another family connection, the president's brother, Neil Bush, has reportedly received funding for his educational software company from the UAE investors. A call to his company was not returned.

Another administration connection, President Bush chose a Dubai Ports World executive to head the U.S. Maritime Administration. David Sanborn, the former director of Dubai Ports' European and Latin American operations, he was tapped just last month to lead the agency that oversees U.S. port operations.

The United Arab Emirates not only has friends in high places in government, it also has high-powered lobbying connections. This oil- rich nation has been lavishing hundreds of thousands of dollars on K Street, lobbying friends to push its point of view and its goals. One of those friends we found out today is none other than Senator Dole, former Senator Dole.

leaders, are taking over the ports.

I knew it was in the hands of the gang of theives BEFORE the UAE emrites said they weren't going to do the deal. I doubt it ever switched hands.

The UAE probably has a little contracting company that does the work while the backend was always the Bush/saudi crime family. They swiched contracting firms so what.

Bet GW sr. put it together. Knew it when it was announced the first time.

btw, those ex-foreign leaders, are likely not getting a lot of say on that council. I think George Bush Sr. And the Sauds are running that group, with George Bush Sr being their leader.

44. Here they go again, trying to distort the issue! This was NEVER about WHO!
It was HOW this was handled, that was always the issue!

The "we don't want them A-rabs buying our ports..." argument and these current "we need AmeRRRican owners" arguments are manufactured outrage to hide the real problem with the deal!

The REAL issue is that this deal to sell our ports to a Foreign government, long known as the place to go if you want to launder money, buy illegal weapons, etc., was being done without any over-site, let alone knowledge of, Congress and maybe even "the President."

Basically what they did was say to the Senators and Congress people, "Oh, by the way, we just sold the ports in your state to foreign government..."

Hell they might as well have sold them to The Mafia.

49. Question of competence
It's very clear that the U.S. government, under the control of Vice
President Richard Cheney, had scheduled five conflicting war games
for the morning of Sept. 11, which moved a substantial number of
the U.S. fighter response forces out of the region so that they could
not respond. The so-called hijackers were, in effect, agents working
for the U.S. government. Al Qaeda had been co-opted to perpetrate the
attack, which then gave the U.S. government the pretext for all the
military adventurism and occupation that has taken place since.
