Osama bin Laden's niece to star in reality TV show


NEW YORK (Reuters) - Osama bin Laden's niece, an aspiring singer who posed for a sexy photo shoot in a men's magazine last year, has signed up for a reality television show about her life and her as yet unfulfilled "quest for stardom."

Wafah Dufour Bin Ladin, whose mother was married to the al Qaeda leader's half brother, was born in California but lived in Saudi Arabia from the age of three to 10.

"I understand that when people hear my last name, they have preconceived notions, but I was born an American and I love my country," Dufour said in a statement from ReganMedia announcing the deal to develop a reality TV series.

Dufour has dropped the "Bin Ladin" -- a different spelling of the Arabic name from that used by Osama bin Laden -- and now goes by the name Wafah Dufour.

Lookin' like an eating disorder victim who's fresh off a month-long heroin jag is a whole 'nother animal entirely. Big men, back me up... I'm 6'5", 208 pounds, and I'm here to tell ya that poor woman'd snap in a high wind. Lovin' from a big man (or a stout little man) would kill 'er! Plus, all seriousness aside, with big feet like that, being "density challenged" is the least of her aesthetic worries. I know, I know, my humor is crude; I apologize. These kinds of cruel value-judgements based on appearance are lamentably what happens to women who put themselves forth as sex objects; they are cruelly adjudicated as such by testosterone-besotted men. When I first saw the pix from the "sexy" shoot, (at Yahoo "most emailed"), my first thought was, "She's using the notoriety of her onerous relative to get her foot in some strange doors. (Which begs the question, "why'd she choose that particular set of objectifying doors in the first place?") You know right away the harsh criteria by which she's going to be judged and cruelly compared. It submits her to the kind of malodorous scrutiny that women who pursue objectification-based careers must sadly endure. If she'd pursued, say, a professorship at Harvard, her looks wouldn't matter to the slobbering masses who ogle "sexy shoots" in magazines. (Or Yahoo... shame upon me. Morbid curiosity got my goat). BUT, the good news is that uncle osama is bound to be positively apoplectic at his niece barin' her goodies for infidel eyes. I reckon every cloud has it's silver lining. My being ugly gives me a delightfully unique and often disturbingly un-cluttered view of what bein' purty really counts for in this world. But, personal aesthetics are just that... personal. One man's bean pole is another man's venus. It's like arguing over your favorite color.
