Frist Leads Informal GOP Poll for '08
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - With home-field advantage, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist placed first in an informal poll of 2008 presidential hopefuls at a Republican conference Saturday night.

The two-term Tennessee senator received 526 first-place votes, or 36.9 percent, in the Southern Republican Leadership Conference's "straw poll" sponsored by Hotline, a political digest. Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney finished second with 14.4 percent and Sen. George Allen (news, bio, voting record) of Virginia finished third, tied with President Bush — who cannot seek a third term.

The results were not a surprise and were unlikely to impact the still-evolving 2008 presidential field. Frist was the only potential candidate who aggressively recruited delegates.

Sen. John McCain (news, bio, voting record) of Arizona, among the most popular Republicans in national surveys, threw a wrench in the polling Friday night by asking delegates to vote for Bush as a show of support. He finished a distant fifth.

How amusing that they did not follow McCain's recommendation to vote for W. Wonder what job McCain is really running for (wink, wink)!

the base and the very religious right. Oh, and remember how he viewed that Terri Shavio tape and was able to make a diagnosis? I think we should consider him a worthy opponent.

Take a guess on her comments--

    1. She is 94 and has gotten more opinionated as she has gotten older.
    2. She is a retired OR nurse - and has the "normal" OR nurse opinion of surgeons.
    3. Especially arrogant "high society surgeons."

24. If he's ever elected president, it will be sheer hell to endure one of
his speeches. He is mercilessly dull. On any topic, Bill Frist could put a hyperactive chimpanzee into a coma.

My hunch is that many straw polls are not terribly reliable, and that, coupled with rumors that Frist "packed" the house in Memphis, suggests that he's not that many folks' favorite for 2008.

Butcher of cats. Yuck.

28. If a pollster calls....
and asks who you would like to see atop the Republican ticket, restrain your democratic principles that might lead you to pick somebody you could stand. Tell them you want Frist because he's such a warm, friendly sort. (If you are taken with a coughing fit, just apologize to the nice pollster.) I'd love to see Frist think he has what it takes so we can then run our guy against the anti-kitty/pro-Schiavo past, the day-trading present, and the continuation of the fascist future. Oh, and ditto on the person who said Frist was boring -- he's got all the charisma of a bag of wet cement.

30. Time to dust off Frist's ethics violations. Also, how many millions did
HCA bilk the US government for? Let's see now. He owned blind trusts that weren't blind when he did legislative 'favors' for health care cooperatives and such, is that close? Sounds like he should be in the slammer with Duke.

32. Republicans look to a future without Bush
http://feeds.bignewsnetwork.com/redir.php?jid=166f95b7a8aee43c&cat=c08dd24cec417021

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Reuters) - Republican contenders for the White House walked a political tightrope at a weekend gathering of party activists -- expressing solidarity with President George W. Bush while stressing differences over issues such as deficits and big government.

While praising Bush's leadership, they condemned runaway government spending, rising debt and expanding bureaucracies -- which have grown under Bush and added to a flood of political difficulties that have sent his approval ratings plummeting.

"These last five years we've been hit with unexpected challenges -- a recession, 9/11, homeland security, the war on terror, Katrina. They've required action and investment," said Republican Senate Leader Bill Frist, one of a half-dozen 2008 White House hopefuls who addressed nearly 2,000 mostly conservative activists from 26 states at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference.

35. Young George Washington chopped down a cherry tree, and he could not
tell a lie.

Young Abraham Lincoln used to walk for miles in the snow, just to return his library books.

Young Bill Frist would round up stray cats and torture them. Hmm, that just doesn't have the same warm-fuzzy feeling as the Wahington and Lincoln tales.
