Audit finds racism, harassment at LAFD

LOS ANGELES, March 11 (UPI) -- A recent audit of the Los Angeles Fire Department, widely considered one of the best in the nation, found rampant racism, sexual harassment and hazing.

Last November, Tennie Pierce, 50, filed suit against the department and three firefighters over a "practical joke." Dog food was mixed into his spaghetti dinner by another firefighter without his knowledge, while the others stood by and watched, the Los Angeles Times said.

To Pierce, the only African American firefighter working that shift at the station, the incident was clearly racist.

The audit found that 87 percent of the department's African Americans who responded to a survey had either experienced or witnessed discrimination on the job, reported the Times.
