(Katherine) Harris To Make Announcement On Senate Campaign

Harris To Make Announcement On Senate Campaign

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris will end speculation next week about her U.S. Senate campaign, either getting out under pressure from the party she was loyal to during the 2000 presidential recount or forging ahead in spite of it.

Harris canceled plans Saturday to attend the Southern Republican Leadership Conference in Memphis, Tenn., and instead sent a statement about her candidacy to unseat Democratic incumbent Bill Nelson.

"While there has been much speculation in recent days concerning my campaign, and our party faces challenges in this midterm election, I am confident with your dedication and commitment, we shall be victorious in November," she said.

...

Her statement, however, was vague, not saying whether Harris thought she would be victorious. Rather, it said she would "prayerfully prepare with my family, friends and advisers to finalize the strategy for a major announcement next week concerning my candidacy for the U.S. Senate."

She's gone.

35. It does can happen...
We had a wacky premier here in BC (anyone remember Bill VanderZalm) that did just that. He was a religious nut that totally amazed and embarassed the province with his bizarre ideas. His popularity was down even lower than the chimps and there were new scandals popping up all the time so he called a big press conference. Everyone was expecting him to do the right thing and gracefully step aside. Throughout his lengthy announcement it sounded like he was going to do just that, then suddenly at the end after acknowleging all his mistakes and unpopularity he said, "and that's why I'm staying on!" It was as if he had planned to quit and at the last minute couldn't go through with it.

It was surreal, but then everything around that guy was. He also ran a religious gardening theme park called Fantasy Gardens, he was a rabidly chauvinistic anti-choicer and he and his party were implicated in all sorts of corruption and money scandals. His strange wife was never photographed without wearing a dumb looking headband, no matter what she was wearing, and she wasn't shy about being in front of the cameras.

They would have fit in well with the Repukes.

8. Even if the state GOP claimed Burns was kicked out
Burns would have some frothing mouth ad claiming he'll never quit.... Besides, I'd much rather go up against Burns than say Racicot....

10. Agree, but it is SO much fun to poke him with a stick!
Hey, they are saying really unkind things about Conrad where I am. You know that means something ;) Also saying some flat out treasonous things about bush/cheney! AMAZING what I am hearing spoken aloud and without prompting around these parts.

18. I figure Burns may end up quitting, especialy if he starts making
grand jury appearences (or refuses to make them.)

If the legal aspects of the situation start in time, (grand jury or whatever) Burns will have to quit.

Anybody know the MT rules / timing on ballot access for Repo US Sen. Candidates?

What I guess I'm asking is what is the time frame that Burns could withdraw and the Repos could still come up with a challenger for the general election?

6. K. Harris you have been caught red handed taking bribes so go and ...
.... prayerfully prepare for what ever. I still want to know about DBT scrubbing 55,000 black
voters from the voter roles in 2000 and one machine giving bush 16,000 votes after the voting
had stopped and the three networks had all called the race for Gore.

14. Katherine Harris is a mediocre woman with
a mediocre mind. She is a silly person who somehow got carried along by the political machine. I shall never forget her at Bush's State of the Union address right after she was elected to congress. She came over dressed in an outfit more appropriate for a morning wedding and was looking around to see who would notice her. She acts like a 7th grader in a junior high clique.

15. Let's all call her and tell her we love her so she doesn't pull out.
Although it may be too late however but we do need her to run here. Anyone else could actually beat Nelson (although frankly, if they rig the machines again, it doesn't matter who runs against Nelson).

40. Didn't she do this once before this election cycle? I am having a Yogi
"deja vu all over again" Berra moment. It seems to me that last summer or fall she made a big deal out of reconsidering whether or not she would stay in the Senate race and then when the day came she opted to stay in. This may be a Katherine Harris m.o. to get her supporters to rally around the Maybelline mask.

Dems better check to make sure there is not an "action-figure, movie-star, former pro-football player, Austrian beef-cake" type candidate they are going to throw into this mix.

I think Pete Rose is a FL resident, and is consistent with Republican moral authority, integrity and intelligence.
