The United States is developing the concept of a "cold war" with Iran.

It would be a third way between trying to engage with the hard-line government there and attacking its nuclear facilities with the risk of major conflict.

6. No, I interpret this as a big hint that they want to ratchet

things down. Intimidation doesn't seem to have done the trick, and actually going to war would be far too expensive and dangerous. Best to allow them to acquire the bomb; the Iranians are not stupid enough to attack Israel. So there will be a cold war. At least that's my guess. I could be wrong, but I hope to God I'm not wrong -- military action against Iran of any kind would be a catastrophe.

4. More evidence that the BBC is a joke...

Funny the term 'cold war' is in quotes--but NO ref. to it or the decades long policy it represents appears in the body of the story...

Nor does the story even lend evidence to that conclusion.

Is it the "Third Way' the hamfisted correspondent writes about...IF so, what are the 2 other ways again? Attack...um...not to attack, but be hostile....or um...not attack and bride with trade deals....or um...do nothing...or attack, but only the parts with the oil...or um...???

For the past year, the growing tensions mounting between the US, Israel, and Iran are reaching a point where military action against Iran is w/in months of becoming reality. The repercussions are terrifying as such military action could involve countries such as China and Russia as they share massive energy/economic interests w/ Iran. The most likely scenario we would face would be the collapse of the US economy as the combination of a massive rise in oil prices and a run on the US dollar would surely be the weapon many countries would use to fight back against a preemptive US or Israeli strike.
