Democrat to enter U.S. Senate race to challenge Joseph Lieberman


HARTFORD, Conn. -- Greenwich businessman Ned Lamont entered Connecticut's U.S. Senate race Monday to challenge U.S. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman for the Democratic nomination.

Lamont's challenge is the first Lieberman has faced from within his party during his 18 years in office.

Lamont hopes to garner the support of Connecticut Democrats who've expressed dissatisfaction with Lieberman's pro-war stance in Iraq and his perceived closeness with President Bush's administration.

"Our troops are making their country proud with their service," Lamont is quoted on his campaign Web site. "But this war is not making us any safer. It's time for US troops to move to the background and let the Iraqi people step forward and take responsibility for their own destiny."

and his family tree is quite interesting. His grandfather was Corliss Lamont, a well known Socialist in his day. He strikes me as one of those old CT Yankees that can be quirky liberals. It's kind of nice.

P.S. Lamont is definitely handsomer than Joe (that's not saying much given the mug Joe has on him). He comes across as soft spoken (perhaps a little too much so)and very decent. He's a likable guy but not too approachable, maybe a bit like John Kerry.

Now this poll is pretty nonsensical, since Lieberman CAN'T run as an independent in the general election unless he were to quit the party before the filing deadline.

More useful, in the crosstabs of this poll we see that amongst Democrats, the breakdown is as follows:

Lieberman 47
Lamont 36

So Lieberman is under 50 amongst Democrats, just 11 points ahead, against a candidate no one has ever heard of. That's absolutely insane.

But it's clear that Lieberman is starting to feel the heat. Yesterday, people signed up to Lieberman's email list got the first email from Lieberman's camp since 2004, this one bragging about how tough he's been on the administration:
