SPRINGFIELD, Illinois (AP) -- Swarms of tornadoes killed at least 10 people across the Midwest, shut down the University of Kansas and damaged so much of Springfield, Illinois, on Monday that the mayor said "every square inch" of town suffered some effects.

The violent weather started during the weekend, part of a line of storms that stretched from the southern Plains up the Ohio Valley, and continued Monday.

Fierce wind raked Springfield early Monday, causing more damage in a city that had been struck by a tornado the night before. Power lines were down across city, trees uprooted and windows blown out. (Watch the swath of destruction as residents awake after the storm -- 1:22)

Nineteen people were treated for minor injuries, and police were searching homes and businesses early Monday for other victims, city spokesman Ernie Slottag said.

In a neighborhood of southwestern Springfield, Illinois, a mother, father and child survived in their home overnight by huddling in a bathroom as the storm ripped away the roof over their heads, CNN's Keith Oppenheim reported. Powerful winds carried the roof across the street, depositing it in their neighbor's backyard.

Not far away, at a Huck's gas station, snapped power polls dangled over a roadway. Gasoline pumps were overturned amid widespread debris -- plastic, plywood and sheet metal

5. Just read this, and heart leaped

My parents live just south of Springfield - I called them and they are ok. The tornadoes passed about 5 miles north of their house.

I grew up in Springfield, so this hits home - the school in New Berlin (town north of my folks) was destroyed.

6. I drove through this bad weather

as it roared through northwest Arkansas last night-just had to dodge downed limbs of trees. Saw the clouds with lightning flashing within them-once I think it illuminated what looked like 3 funnels. An awesome sight.

10. I heard on the news this morning that it's been warmer than

normal and it is early for the tornados. And they are predicting that this is going to be a busy storm season!!

11. It has been warm here for about a week.

At least one day, it was around 75 degrees. A friend in Florida said it got up to around 84 degrees there.

12. Yeah.

I was in Lawrence, KS yesterday, when the tornado hit, it caused a ton of damage. Trees uprooted, flipped over semis, trailers, cars...and when my wife and I came home last night(sw missouri) we were welcomed by more severe weather...one hell of a weekend. BTW, we got a bunch of pics of the lawrence damage...we didn't see the tornado, but we did see the wreckage.
