Won't 'cut and run,' PM says
PM to visit with Afghan leader tomorrow
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan – Prime Minister Stephen Harper told Canadian troops in Afghanistan today he won't "cut and run" from their mission and is prepared to take on "doubters" in Ottawa who question the human cost of the effort.
On the ground with Canadian forces today at the Kandahar air base and at a reconstruction centre in Kandahar city, Harper says his eyes have been opened to the depth and breadth of this country’s commitment to rebuilding Afghanistan.
In his speech to the troops, Harper vowed once again that Canada would not "cut and run" from Afghanistan – a reply to critics.
Harper told reporters that he’ll now be able to report to "doubters" back in Canada: "I went to Afghanistan, I talked to the soldiers, I talked to the people and they’re determined to see a successful mission. You know, you can be told that. But it’s a little different when you look at them eyeball to eyeball and understand that’s where they’re coming from.”
