President Bush's Job Approval Ratings Continue to Drop (36% - Harris Poll)

President Bush's Job Approval Ratings Continue to Drop, According to Latest Harris Poll
Less than one-third of U.S. adults believe the country is going in the right direction

ROCHESTER, N.Y., March 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Although slightly better than
the lowest approval ratings measured during his presidency (34% positive, 65%
negative in November 2005), President Bush's job approval numbers have again
taken a downward slide this month as just over one-third (36%) of U.S. adults
rate his job performance as positive and 64 percent rate his performance as
negative. In February, 40 percent viewed the president's job performance
positively while 58 percent viewed it negatively. Some of this may be linked
to the thoughts on the state of the country as 31 percent believe the country
is moving in the right direction while 60 percent feel things have pretty
seriously gotten off on the wrong track. This is directionally down from last
month when 32 percent felt the country was moving in the right direction and
59 percent felt things had pretty seriously gotten off on the wrong track.

For the first time since the hunting accident, Vice President Dick
Cheney's job approval ratings were measured. Three in 10 U.S. adults view his
job performance positively while 67 percent view it negatively. What is
interesting is that there is no real change from November, prior to the
accident, when 30 percent had a positive view and 65 percent had a negative
view.

...

For two other administration officials, the news is mixed. Secretary of
State Condoleezza Rice still receives the highest performance ratings among
all political figures measured in the poll as 51 percent have a positive view
of her job performance as compared to 44 percent who have a negative view.
While Secretary Rice's positive approval rating remained similar to what was
measured in November 2005 (52%), her negative rating increased three
percentage points (from 41%). Similarly for Secretary of Defense Donald
Rumsfeld, his positive rating has remained steady (34% in November to 35%
now), while his negative rating has increased slightly (59% in November to 61%
now).
This month we also asked about Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove. Just over
one-quarter (28%) rate the job he is doing positively while over half (55%)
rate it negatively. U.S. adults appear more likely to have an opinion about
Karl Rove, one way or another, than all four of the members of Congress and
the Supreme Court Chief Justice included in this poll, as indicated by the
percentage of "not sure's."

1. Rove's approval lower than Cheney's?
Two slimy toads together at the bottom of the approval pit.

2. It's reaching almost Nixonian levels.
And I am nearly beside myself with Schadenfreude.

But I can't figure out why CondorLizard still gets 51% positive. She's just as incompetent as the rest of those meatheads.

3. Yeah, I wondered about that too
but there is no further breakdown. She might poll higher among women and minorities.

4. "She might poll higher among women and minorities."
I don't know if that's the case - just because she shares some group characteristic, it doesn't mean she's going to be embraced by members of the group. But maybe it's true - perhaps Cheney's rating is higher among white males.

11. You're right
I didn't state it as fact, only speculating. FWIW I'm a minority (Latino) and I hate her guts. But I DO know Latinos who will say they like Gonzales - he's a role model, the first Latino Attorney General. These Latinos are not generally particularly political, but most people aren't. And there is a significant amount of group identification out there, all around. I'm not applauding it, just noting that it's quite common.

Focusing on your last sentence, we know for a fact that, taken as a group:

a) men are more Republican than women

b) whites are more Republican than non-whites

of course there are individual exceptions, but the overall numbers don't lie. So yes, I'm sure Cheney's rating among white males is way higher than his rating among black females. Of course, I'm also sure his rating among rich white men is higher than his rating among poor white men.

What are the internals? How many Republicans polled as opposed to the number of Democrats?

12. They should publish the questions
How the questions are worded are very key. I've had telephone surveys and the way they phrase the questions makes it difficult to answer. They should publish the questions.

14. The questions are published...
in the link. They do NOT, however, give their proportional adjustment figures or justifications for those figures.

The questions seemed reasonably neutral to me, but the poll results numbers seem too high (I live in a red precinct, in a red county, in a red state, not far from Craford, actually, and these numbers seem high to me based on conversations with locals).
