Mexico to revive mothballed nuclear power program
Mexico to revive mothballed nuclear power program

MEXICO CITY, March 14 (Xinhuanet) -- Mexico plans to build a new nuclear power plant and spend 150 million U.S. dollars upgrading an existing plant in its efforts to revive a nuclear power program ignored since 1990, Mexico's state Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) said on Tuesday.

"We have to think in the long term. In the next 20 years, nuclear power is an energy source, we and many other countries, will need," CFE head Alfredo Elias Ayub said, adding that the new plant would be completed before 2020, and is expected to cost between 3 and 4 billion dollars.

Because of the high construction costs, Mexico is unlikely to build more than one such plant, he added.

The plant to be upgraded was completed in 1990 by GE Energy and is based in Laguna Verde in the eastern Mexican state of Veracruz. It generates 5 percent of Mexico's electricity, but had to be shutdown last week when a cable burned out.

4. a nuclear power right on our doorstep
or under our doormat as the case may be.

I say we invade! }( That'll learn 'em.

Did Condi say we would turn Mexico to glass yet if they started enriching Uranium? She says that about all the nuclear reactors. I just don't know when to take her seriously.

6. They have a couple of existing reactors,
with the occasional stated desire to decommission them. But they're apparently still up and running. One as of 1990, the other since 1995. And yet, no invasion.

7. Mexico doesn't produce uranium and has only 2000 tons of low-grade uranium
ore (that can't be produced economically) so they are going to have to import fuel for these things.

What they are going to do with the spent fuel, nobody knows....
