Va. Democrat (Rep. Jim Moran) Wants Al Gore to Run in 2008

WASHINGTON - Democrat Al Gore, who in 2000 lost one of the closest presidential elections in U.S. history to Republican George W. Bush, should run for president in 2008, a congressman said Wednesday.

Questioned about the contest, Democratic Rep. Jim Moran of Virginia said: "I'd like to see him get into the race."

"He won the popular vote in 2000, and I think he's even stronger and more committed," Moran said Wednesday on C-SPAN's Washington Journal. "But you know, he's got his own life and it's his decision to make."

Gore has retreated into private life in Tennessee since his contested loss to Bush in the 2000 election. But the former vice president occasionally delivers spirited speeches criticizing Bush administration policies and promoting his views on foreign policy, the environment and other issues.

Sorry, the title has slipped my mind at the moment. The movie Al Gore is doing on the environment and global warming. Fineman says that it could bring him back into the spotlight enough to think about it. I don't know if Al Gore wants to run again. I'd vote for him. AGAIN! He did not choose to retreat or run away. He fought for as long as he could, and did everything he could LEGALLY do; he did all I could ask of him. To defy the SCOTUS decision would have been a disaster for the country; the only other option, challenging the electors - which he refused to do, would have been just as bad. We hovered at the brink throughout that god-awful election debacle; if the situation had been reversed, we would have literally been in a civil war since then.

His concession was the act of a TRUE STATESMAN - not a politician. And since then he has continued to be a statesman in the best sense of the word, speaking out publicly and regularly about the state of the nation. Speaking out for US, the people.

As far as using the word "charlatan"? Obviously you don't know anything about Al Gore or the work he has done - for his whole career, both before and since 2000 - to try to make our country better.

I would support Al Gore in a heartbeat; I would work 24/7/365 to get him elected in 08.

You are welcome to your own opinion, but I expect people who throw out their opinions to know something about what they're talking about, especially if it is criticism. So if you're going to comment on Al Gore, you should get your facts straight first. There are a lot of DU'ers here who are FAR BETTER INFORMED ON THIS THAN YOU, and will be more than happy to educate you.

Current TV, Board member of Apple, MoveOn speeches, personal involvement in Katrina hospital rescue, Sundance documentary, speeches abroad,tireless campaigning for Democratic candidates around the country, strong positions opposing almost every major policy of Bushco and innumerable presentations on the planet's greatest threat: climate change. Some retreat.

I expect you're going to come back with something about him conceding after SCOTUS stopped the vote-counting. At that point it would have been politically absurd and had no positive effect for Gore to oppose the decision. It might have thrilled some if he had done so and you might not understand why, but opposition at that point would have been a disaster.

Gore doesn't just talk, he gets things done. He has accomplished more to combat climate change than any person in history. He is literally fighting to save the planet, or at least civilization. PSPS, don't you get that?

By the way, you called Gore a coward. Shame on you. He enlisted during the Viet Nam war so that somebody else from Carthage wouldn't have to go. That's guts, especially considering he strongly opposed the war.

At least if you are going to drink Kool Aid, make sure it isn't theirs.

Personally, I don't think Gore will run. More's the pity - as other folks have been saying a lot lately, Gore "gets it". But The Powers That Be are already anointing Hillary as the 2008 Dem candidate. Because, y'know, it's all about the size of the war chest. And Hillary has more money than anyone else. In the Universe.

Sad, because as much as I like HC, she most definitely DOESN'T "get it".

Okay, so everyone knows (even the republicans) that Gore won in 2000.

But here's my stand: Gore won't stand a chance, unless he gets support from his fellow board members at Apple, plus some major backing from the republican party via small groups.

I know, I know "What the hell? Republican party?? You do know Gore is a Democrat, right?".

As a matter of fact, I do. But think about it. If you were the republican party, and Hillary was looking like the top mutt at the kennel on retro disco night, wouldn't you push money into Gore's pockets by labeling your company as 'Pro-democracy' or liberal? Get the weaker link to win the primaries and the republican candidate has a much better chance.

And I'm sure the people reading this who know the 'Nader' factor have an idea of what I mean. Nader, Perot...no matter what color you paint the pig, it still rolls in dirt.

18. To get Gore to run, something special is going to have to happen

I've been thinking about this a lot lately.

Gore is essentially keeping his options open for a "Draft Gore" movement. But he's made it fairly clear that he's happy doing what he's doing right now, and that the only way he'll be a candidate again is if the people demand it.

But the various "Draft Gore" groups have been around so long now that they lack the focus and initiative that a campaign like this needs to succeed. Something bigger, more high profile, needs to be done in order to attract both Gore's and the media's attention.

I've been considering registering a domain like "PersonalLettersToGore.com" and encouraging people to send in not just e-mails, but handwritten letters (which would be scanned and put up on the website) encouraging Gore to run.

Anyone got any other ideas? We really ought to have a DU contest where people just brainstorm ways of getting Gore to throw his hat in the ring.

You're idea of handwritten letters scanned or photographed (more people with digital cameras than scanners now by a factor of ___) is very good. It would be a great angle for the press to grab onto. Why don't you do it?

I'm traveling to Europe for a long time. I'll write you one from a cafe on that continent.

Perhaps personal Postcard might be an option as well -- that is, since true digital age people like me are going to send you the digital shot of the letter we could also send you a photo from where the letter or card was taken.
