In interview, (Gov) Romney aligns with Christian right (Pres. contender)
In an apparent pitch to the crucial evangelical base of the Republican Party, Governor Mitt Romney says he has been ''at the forefront" of the nation's toughest cultural battles and that his values are "on the same page" with the Christian right.

Romney, a possible presidential candidate, says in an upcoming interview on C-SPAN that conservative values that ''lead to our success as a nation" are ''under attack." He also says that evangelical Christians in Massachusetts have been among his key supporters.

Some political analysts have suggested that evangelical Christians will not support Romney because of theological differences with his Mormonism. Romney tried to dispel that notion during a taping of the C-SPAN program "Q&A," to air Sunday night.

"I know a number of great evangelicals that I speak with and that are very interested in me and what I stand for," he told host Brian Lamb, according to a transcript of the interview released yesterday. "We worked together in Massachusetts. They had no difficulty supporting me there."

1. The Christiban blew it.
What a tin-eared idiot Romney is! Can't he see the big Christiban Revolution is over? They had their chance to have a major impact on American law and policy. To a frightening extent, they actually succeeded.

But they shot themselves in the foot by putting forth the Keystone Kristiban to run the show. In the Pew survey, the word most commonly used to describe Bush was "incompetent" and most Americans say they're ready for change.

2. People in Massachusetts ...
... see right through this phony.

What other governor in the U.S. runs around denigrating his own state?

He's not running again for governor of MA, because he KNOWS he would LOSE.

3. He knows the abortion issue will be the #1 issue for the Fudie voters this
fall, but guess what, by 2008, it will have imploded because by then it will be a court-clogged mess. What a dumb ass.

4. He's concentrating on the nomination
The fundies will still have a lot of power in the GOP during that process. Plenty of time to run to the center if he wins the nomination. That's SOP.

5. He underestimates the bigotry and size of the anti-Mormon movement
Conservative evangelicals are taught bizarre, hateful things about what Mormons supposedly believe. They are told to believe it is a non-Christian cult that opposes everything they believe in. There are protestants who make a living by publishing hate literature and going on speaking tours about their fictional version of Mormonism.

Romney will be the victim of the prejudices and bigotry of his own ideological allies. Its amazing how many conservative, Republican Mormons align themselves with the Christian right without confronting the fact that conservative protestants don't respect them.
