Bush: Violence Creating Urgency in Iraq (radio address)
Edited on Sat Mar-18-06 10:25 AM by maddezmom
WASHINGTON - President Bush on Saturday braced Americans for more bloodshed in Iraq but said recent civil strife has motivated warring political factions to move quickly to set up a representative government.

"Our ambassador to Iraq, Zal Khalilzad, reports that the violence has created a new sense of urgency among these leaders to form a national unity government as quickly as possible," Bush said in his weekly radio address.

"I urge them to continue their work to put aside their differences, to reach out across political, religious and sectarian lines, and to form a government that can confront the terrorist threat and earn the trust and confidence of all Iraqis."

Bush's broadcast came in advance of a speech he plans to deliver in Cleveland on Monday, the second in a series of talks marking Sunday's three-year anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq. In the speech, Bush will discuss how the United States is working with various sectors of Iraqi society to defeat terrorists, restore calm and help rebuild homes and communities.

4. Lets track back... first it was the violence was no concern... so Bring
it On...

then it was that the spike in violence was proof that the end of the violence was near and the insurgency was in its "last throes"...

and now the violence is touted as beneficial as it is pushing the urgency of a political resolution...

Good luck with that, jr.

9. Bush urges Iraqis to form govt quickly
By Ross Colvin 9 minutes ago

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - U.S. President George W. Bush urged Iraqi leaders on Saturday to form a government of national unity as quickly as possible as U.S. and Iraqi troops pressed ahead with a sweep for insurgents north of Baghdad.

Speaking on the eve of the third anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, Bush also urged Americans growing increasingly impatient with the war to resist a temptation to retreat, even as he acknowledged setbacks and the prospect of more bloodshed.

"I urge them to continue their work to put aside their differences, to reach out across political, religious and sectarian lines," he said of Iraqi politicians, still deadlocked over who will lead a new government three months after polls.

Washington sees a government of national unity embracing Sunnis, Kurds and Shi'ites as the best hope of stabilizing Iraq and allowing it to begin pulling out its 133,000 troops.

Bush: 'Fighting and Sacrifice' Needed

By Guy Gugliotta
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, March 18, 2006; 3:36 PM

On the eve of the third anniversary of the Iraq invasion, President Bush today promised to "finish the mission" with total victory, urging the American public to remain steadfast but offering no indication when victory might be achieved.

"More fighting and sacrifice will be required," Bush said in his weekly radio address. "For some, the temptation to retreat and abandon our commitments is strong. Yet there is no peace, there's no honor and there's no security in retreat. So America will not abandon Iraq to the terrorists who want to attack us again."

Bush's address comes at a time when confidence in the administration's Iraq strategy appears to have reached all-time lows. A Washington Post-ABC News poll this month found that 65 percent of Americans surveyed thought Bush had no plan for victory, while 35 percent -- the lowest level ever recorded by the poll -- said he did.

Bush used the radio address to draw attention to a series of speeches he is giving this month to rally support for the Iraq war. Last week the first of these focused on efforts to train Iraqi troops and success at mitigating the threat of terrorist bombings and casualties caused by the explosion of roadside "improvised explosive devices."...

20. and there is a WH 'fact sheet' to go along.

A White House "Fact Sheet" on Iraq that accompanied the radio address noted that casualties from the explosive devices had been halved in the past 18 months and that nearly half of the devices are being found and disabled before they can be detonated.

The fact sheet also buttressed the president's assertion last week that Iraqi security forces were assuming greater battlefield responsibility. The fact sheet said that "Iraqi forces now conduct more independent operations throughout the country that do Coalition forces."

Democrats noted last week, however, that a recent Pentagon report said the number of "level one" Iraqi units capable of operating independent of the United States had dropped from one to zero in recent months.

And for the most part, the fact sheet ignored the missteps and false starts that have dogged the Iraq war since the invasion in March 2003 and instead contrasted Iraq under Saddam Hussein with Iraq today.

Three years ago, the fact sheet said, "life in Iraq was marked by brutality, fear and terror," and Iraqis "had no voice in their country or their lives." Today, by contrast, "the reign of terror has been replaced by a democratically elected government."

64. If There is a Draft, It Will Never Be For People Like the Bushes
Edited on Sat Mar-18-06 10:15 PM by AndyTiedye
If the draft comes back, it certainly won't be for the
kids of the rich and powerful. Never was. Never will be.

All that stuff is for little people, don't ya know.

We must never succumb to the temptation to support any
form of draft based on the fantasy that it will be "fair".
There ain't no such thing as a fair draft.

At least today, even poor folks can say NO to the Army.
It may not be easy, they may have to work 2 jobs at
minimum wage, but the Army will not impress them by
force, yet.

We are facing a very dangerous time now, since they
have every intention of invading Iran. For that,
they will have to have a draft. Actually, more like
a hurricane, that will grab up practically everybody
who doesn't "know the right people". How many troops
would they need? It has to be in the millions.

It we had a draft today, the US and Israel would have
attacked Iran already.

Every Iraqi dead??

The GOP owns the Senate, House, white house, & Supreme Court -- and they still aren't satisfied. Do they want everyone to bow down to the mighty white male??

But then bushie lives in an alternative reality -- War is Peace.

Total Victory is a complete disintegration of both Iraq and the world????

after his revolution triumphed and there was no food to feed the people... SACRFICE FOR THE MOTHERLAND was his motto...and damn if bush ain't copying him...and every damn bastard dictator who lives, has lived, and will live on this earth. in fact the damn bastard bush is one.

today my blood boiled when some proselitizing christians came up to my parked vehicle where i was waiting for my husband and wanted to give me some material to read.

they said, "would you be interested in ....?" I said, "NO. SAVE IT. I HATE BUSH. I HATE HIS RIGHT WING CHRISTIAN COALTION. I HATE RELIGION." -- the woman said, "RELIGION HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH POLITICS." i SAID, "IN BUSH'S WORLD IT HAS EVERYTHING TO DO WITH POLITICS. RELIGION IS NO LONGER RELIGION IT IS NOW POLITICS." SHE SAID, "I BELONG TO A RELIGION WHICH HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH POLITICS"---I SAID, "GOOD FOR YOU. NOW GET ON AND LEAVE ME ALONE"...

If it would have been possible for a human to burst right then and there, i would have.

It was said about the Muslims in this country: they should speak out against the radicals of their religion.

What are the religious doing to separate themselves from the appearance of implicit support of the Repukes? Or are they all on the Repukian donor lists afterall?

Congrats to you. You sent the religious a wake-up call.

Carry your ass to wherever it is you believe more "fighting and sacrifice" is needed, grab a bat, knife, peashooter, rock, rabid weasel, wolverine or pit bull; whatever happens to be at hand, (on par with the weapons you've so graciously provided the poor souls forced to fight, bleed and die for your pocketbook) and using your jury rigged, (no pun intended, unless you happen to have open eyes and see things the way this bunch goes about "business"), half assed pieces of sh&t that passes for armour, (really nothing more than glorified flower pots and sheet metal) and see how much you can accomplish, you half-assed, yellow bellied, sap-sucking, crackhead, cowardly, snivelling son of a bitch. Oh and by the way, make sure to save a place next to you for Scotty, Condie, Dickie and the rest of the "cabinet", the chicken hawk brigade that agrees to and salivates on your every lying word, the dime store "christians" who wouldn't be recognised by Christ if they had the word tattooed on their sanctimonious foreheads; the oil barons who love to see people die for their bottom lines but wouldn't fight to save their children's lives and your two spawn.
While you're at it, don't forget your parents, Pappy Bush and that nightmare of a mother, the Bronx cabbie. Good luck..

AS a nation we have not been asked to give up one fucking thing (except for our civil liberites which is the last place to start)

No sacrifice to pay for this. Tax cuts and increased deficits seem to be the way to go. Where are our ration books?

Nope, just sit back in you comfy chair and raise a glass of Merlot to our troops. That's all we have to do. All Bush asks of us is that we be armchair patriots. No sacrifice. Just unquestioned support.

"These past three years have tested our resolve," Bush said. "The enemy has proved brutal and relentless . . . and our troops have shown magnificent courage and made tremendous sacrifices" which, along with Iraqi sacrifices, had given Iraq a "historic opportunity" to rebuild itself.

War is a brutal undertaking, Chimp. Patton understood this, Black Jack Pershing understood this, Sherman understood this and these men won their fucking wars!!!!! You share nothing with these warriors and in the greatest twist of irony the insurgents do.

74. WP: As Iraq War Heads Into 4th Year, Bush Pledges 'Complete Victory'
As Iraq War Heads Into 4th Year, Bush Pledges 'Complete Victory'
By Guy Gugliotta
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, March 19, 2006; Page A16

On the eve of the third anniversary of the Iraq invasion, President Bush yesterday promised to "finish the mission" with "complete victory," urging the American public to remain steadfast but offering no indication when victory may be achieved.

Bush's address comes at a time when confidence in the administration's Iraq strategy appears to have reached a new low. A Washington Post-ABC News poll this month found that 65 percent of Americans think Bush has no plan for victory, while 35 percent -- the lowest level ever recorded by the poll -- think he does.

Bush used the radio address to draw attention to speeches he is giving to rally support for the war. Last week, he focused on efforts to train Iraqi troops and success at mitigating the threat of terrorist bombings and casualties caused by roadside "improvised explosive devices."...

I am not willing to accept whatever he says because he's saying it. In fact, I suspect everything he has to say and have for the past 5 years.
Study PNAC. This war was planned way before 9/11, and I'm not willing to give this asshat a pass just because he's president, plus I have grave concerns about the last two elections to get him there.

You know if one person hates you, you can ignore them. If half a dozen people hate you, you can avoid them.

But when the majority of the world's population despises you, then you gotta figure: well maybe you might be doing something wrong...

in a free democracy, people choose a leader who most represents their values. Not a "Father figure" or "dad".

Humankind has been terribly ripped off by its "leaders" over the ages.

Buckminster Fuller said a while back that "the day is coming when people don't need to be governed any longer. They will govern themselves"

In a free democracy, people chose people to represent their values. Many people want a king instead, someone to look up to, to rule over all, to not have to go by any rules except their own. Oh yes, they want a king who will be kind, give them treats, a "father figure" indeed. Hence Reagan. Too bad we do not live in a free democracy but only a semblance of one.

My understanding of democracy is that we put our trust in the hands of those we elect. And, one of the problems with democracy is that our trust is very often put in the hands of the wrong people. Still, I would choose our system, warts and all.

Your "system" has allowed the US to become the pariah of the world

Unleashing WMD's on the world at their discretion

Japan when it was trying to surrender (lots of proof on that if you google enuf)

And spreading Depleted Uranium all over the Middle East since Pappa Bush started using the banned substance in Gulf War 1

Nothing personal, but your "system" SUCKS!!

It allowed Bush and his Mob to steal 2 elections

Ergo, your country, and it's standing in the world

Which, if you haven't noticed, is going in the toilet

101. This the beauty (sort of) of our parliamentary system
.
.
.

Harper is our Prime Minister for the moment

But he is NOT Commander in Chief

nor can he make any major decisions regarding our Canada without support from one of our other parties, main powers being the Blok Quebequios and the NDP

We don't have to register for a party to vote, we walk in, make up our minds and put our pencil mark on the ballot, and most likely hand it to a person we know and watch them cross our name of the voters list as they put our sealed ballot in the box

No-one knows our party affiliations unless we tell them personally

The USA electoral system was directed for a dictatorship from the get-go in my opinion,

well, maybe not before the PNACers assassinated Kennedy . . .

JFK was one of the most respectable Presidents of the USA, Jimmy Carter a close second in my mind

And shame on Clinton for getting caught for a BJ - he coulda been third in my mind, but seeing as Bill allowed the sanctions in Iraq to continue as thousands of children died as a result, - I'm reserving judgment on Monica's "client"

Cuz Monica DID blow him

right out of office !!!!!

Another PNACers plan??

Nahhh

They wouldn't do that

102. Lived in Britain for a while, and I agree that the parliamentary system...
has a lot to recommend it. We probably would have been able to get rid of GWB by now. And I also agree that the assassination of JFK was a turning point, from which there has been no turning back. And, indeed, we still don't know who killed him, or exactly how Carter and Clinton were sabotaged. But I have my suspicions.

Sad

but true

USA could have been indeed a respected nation under the Kennedys I think

but the PNACers had a different goal

and look where the USA is now

Powerful as all get-out, yes

But liked and respected??

You can answer that question yourself . . .

82. This approach has always worked for him in the past.
Shrub has never had to face the consequences for his actions.

He did poorly in school, college & grad school & graduated anyway.

He did coke with no bad consequences. He drove businesses into the ground & lost other people's $$ with no adverse consequences. He did insider trading, he lied about his DUIs, he went AWOL & then lied about his service, he stole two elections, he bungled the deal with the fighter captured by the Chinese, he lied about WMD, he kept shifting stories on the rationale for the war, etc. etc.

Time after time after time, he never had to face the consequences. That is a very dangerous set of personal lessons for a supposed leader. That's why the world is not safe with him around in power.

This White House has redefined the word "fact"!

Democrats noted last week, however, that a recent Pentagon report said the number of "Level 1" Iraqi units capable of operating independently of the United States had dropped from one to zero."

89. Say it with me "Victory is right around the corner and Iraq is not in
Civil War." Because by saying so, makes it true. :sarcasm:

100. No consensus on what VICTORY is, to begin with.
What the military considers victory is at odds with what the White House suits-and-ties consider victory.

It's like Bush is still in campaign mode, and all he can do is offer up some catchy slogans.

104. As Iraq War Heads Into 4th Year, Bush Pledges 'Complete Victory'

Now we know Marion Berry wasn't the only guy in Washington hitting the crack pipe.

105. Yeah.... complete victory like the war on drugs, the war on cancer
and the war on stupidity.... we have lost all three.

Complete victory, to end hatred with cluster bombs and depleted uranium, yes, the birth defects that the people in Iraq are witnessing along with the ones our troops are having to deal with, not to mention their own cancers, will result in complete victory, victory over intelligence and diplomacy.

106. "offering no indication when victory may be achieved..."
Or even what the hell would actually CONSTITUTE victory.

Same as it ever was...

108. "Or even what the hell would actually CONSTITUTE victory."
Needs to be said again!

Sometimes Bush says "victory" means the destruction of all tyrants and evil-doers.

Then he says we aren't sticking around until that happens, we are just gonna stand up a new Iraqi army and leave.

Well then what the hell does he mean when he says we have to stay over there until we achieve victory? Isn't there a huge-ass contradiction there?

It's enough to keep a megalomaniacal, middle-aged child monster drooling at night.

109. So he is going to finish the accomplished mission?
Have I got that right?

And that will be when we have a 'complete victory'. What the heck? Can the MSM really report this with a straight face?

"Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?"
-- a long time ago, back when things were perhaps as dark as they are today.

113. Obviously, he's bracing us for Jenna and Whoits enlistment...right?
I mean... they'll do anything to bounce the numbers.
Ya gotta believe those girls will be seen soon.
Cuz... I haven't seen 'em since the Inauguration, have you?

So, they're coming out of whatever bar they've been patronizing, and signing up for the war, right?
Honor.
Sacrifice.

Yep.

116. I read some more of the posts here - It amazes me that the USA public
.
.
.

is so apathetic about the carnage the the USA is effecting in the Middle East

and interfering with governments all over the planet as well

What the feck do the USA citizens think they have here?

A pass card to interfere with every country in the World???

It sure looks like it

And that'll be the downfall of the USA

Powerful maybe

But hated
