(Russian Fed. Rep.:) Attack on Iraq, US' biggest mistake
St. Petersburg, March 18 - The Russian Federation Representative referred to the attack on Iraq as the United States' biggest mistake throughout history.

In an interview with the IRIB reporter in St. Petersburg, Vataniar Yegia said that the invasion of Iraq by the US military forces counts as the biggest political, strategic and military mistake of Washington during the course of history.

The Russian Parliament Representative criticised Bush's intrusive and war mongering policies in the Middle East and added that the presence of the occupying forces in the region has done irretrievable harm to the so-called ME peace talks.

He also noted that the US invasion of Iraq based on the lame excuse of finding mass destruction weapons has made the region insecure.

1. Not quite, the BIGGEST mistake was allowing the usurper to prevail
in 2000, attacking Iraq comes in a close second though.

5. Welcome to DU, Chance!
Hang in there.
Individuals in ANY country, ANY where have a RIGHT
to form opinions and express themselves.

I don't think you'd like your views dismissed
by a German just because you are living in
the U.S.

See what I mean.....?

6. No, Russia is NOT perfect by a long shot. But if the shoe fits...
There are intelligent people in Russia. They are able understand what a hell of a lot of dimwits in this country are either just too stupid or just to unwilling to face. The conscience choice to invade a country that was no threat to us has bankrupted our Treasury, broken the back of our military, and allowed these criminals to subvert the Constitution of the United States and rub our faces in it while they were doing it.

10. I don't agree with this assessment.
I believe the Viet Nam war was the biggest mistake ever. Why did we even go there? Under the pretext of spreading communism? Oh, please. Some people have speculated that there was some strategic reason for going into Viet Nam, like an oil pipeline route or something like that. But nothing that would warrant the US almost going broke. We lost more troops in VN; 58,000 US soldiers; an enormous loss.

Before that war, the US was a net creditor nation. After VN, we became a net debtor nation and have stayed that way ever since.

At least in Iraq, they had a REASON for invading. There were many reasons.

1) Set up a police station in Iraq and patrol the rest of the Middle East
2) Control the oil, and thereby control the world
3) get US troops out of Saudi Arabia
4) carve up Iraq like a side of beef hanging in a butcher shop. Sell it to the highest bidder, like Kentucky Muslim fried Chicken, Target, Sears. And don't forget those who didn't NEED to bid; Halliburton, KBR, and so on.

I'm not saying it was a good reason; I think it was pure madness. But at least in their minds it was a great idea.

12. Yeah, he's just a lying political stooge.
But I thought the chutzpah was interesting.

And I agree with your assessment WRT VietNam vs Iraq. Vietnam was far less rational, driven almost entirely by domestic political considerations, and did far more damage, really initiated and accelerated the post-WWII decline.

13. The "dominoe theory" led us into Vietnam.
Sure, it was a ludicrous theory and even worse justification, but it was the prevailing view in D.C. at the time Johnson got us heavily involved beginning in January, 1965.
