MOSS POINT - Hollywood came calling after a whistleblower helped Oxford's Richard "Dickie" Scruggs win a multibillion-dollar settlement against tobacco companies.
Now Scruggs, whose landmark fight against the tobacco industry was portrayed in the 1999 movie "The Insider," is following the same script as he takes on insurance companies in Hurricane Katrina's wake.
Scruggs said a "highly placed insider" who works for a major insurance company is helping him build a case against companies that denied claims to thousands of policyholders whose homes were destroyed by the storm. The informant, Scruggs said, gave him copies of internal reports prepared by engineers who were hired by an insurance company to inspect storm-damaged homes.

Scruggs said a second whistleblower is "just starting to come forward" and cooperate with his legal team, the Katrina Group. The whistleblowers' employers may not be aware of their cooperation with the plaintiffs' attorneys, Scruggs added. "We'll see if they're stupid enough to try to shut them down before they talk, which of course creates a huge story - just the fact that they're trying to shut somebody up that has inside information," he said.
