Goal: 'In God We Trust' in City Hall

Hawthorne joins a statewide push to use patriotic words in civic centers. Courts have already ruled there is no violation in such use.
By Doug Irving
DAILY BREEZE

Hawthorne has begun raising money for a city monument dedicated to four words familiar to any casual reader of the dollar bill: "In God We Trust."

The city recently decided to pay tribute to the four words of the national motto with a display inside City Hall. In doing so, it joined a statewide campaign to emblazon the motto in as many civic centers as possible.

The motto, with its reference to God, has been challenged before as an unconstitutional endorsement of religion. But federal courts have already ruled that the motto does not violate the separation of church and state.

(snip)

The American Civil Liberties Union has not challenged similar efforts in the past. The group Americans United, which monitors church-state issues, also has not opposed the placement of the national motto in government buildings.

2. If it's the national motto not much can be done to prevent this
unless we change the motto.

3. It's not the authentic national motto
Edited on Sun Mar-19-06 12:54 AM by depakid
Never was.

"E Pluribus Unum" is the national motto.

The history about how God snuck in there is interesting (and in many ways, it bears on what these so called "patriots" are are doing).

6. It is NOT the "national motto" - it was added in the 1950's by right wing
so-called christian IDIOTS!

It should be removed from all civic displays.

GO TO A FUCKING CHURCH if you want to "worship"!

7. Oh, I don't know. It just seems a little incomplete to me. It ought
say, "In God we trust. All others pay cash."

Of course, these days, paying cash will get you a visit from the DHA, Secret Service, the FBI, or some other alphabet soup government agency. :eyes:

12.  The 1950's? I think you have to go back about 100
years earlier.

17. Less than that...
Added to the 2 cent coin in 1862, this is what happens when you yield to fanatics on this issue. It was then added to all coinage, it wasn't until 1956 that the National Motto, E Pluribus Unum was replaced by In God We Trust and was then applied to Paper Money as well. This was mostly because people thought Atheism equalled Communism, in other words, thanks to stupidity, its now the national motto.

5. That is why it must be removed from all money, too!
This was only added by pseudo christian idiots in the 1950's - same with the pledge.

REMOVE IT ALL.

IT HAS NO PLACE IN THE CIVIC SPHERE!

Want to worship "god" - GO TO A FUCKING CHURCH!

11. Your post is VERY OFFENSIVE
As a born-again, fundamentalist Christian who believes that Jesus Christ died on the cross...uh, wait a second.

Every once in a while my former brainwashing kicks in. Sorry.

Churches sprout like weeds in this area (Dallas-Fort Worth) and not one goddamned thing changes. One more church and does our crime rate drop? Do more street people get help? Is there one fucking measurable difference? No.

It's about time for us infidels/heretics/the damned to take to the streets and "set it off."

As Audioslave sez:

Jesus at the back door
Everything is all right
All we need is some direction
Every time the wind blows
Everything you don’t know
Turns into a revelation
And it all adds up inside your head
Time is wasting

Chorus
Set it off
Set it off now children
Set it right
Set it off
Set it off now children
Set it off
Set it off now children
Set a fire
Set it off
Set it off now children

8. be careful, this is how it starts
I'm currently a sub teacher in the public schools system...a few years ago, some RW 'patriotic' group began to go around to all the local school systems with their "God Bless America/In God We Trust/One Nation Under God" posters all under the guise of 'educating children about our national heritage'...

Of course, the group made it 'completely voluntary' for schools to post the posters--that's their legal loophole, but once they cropped up in one school, NO principal wanted to be the odd man/woman out and have to deal with freep parents...So now, EVERY public school I've been in for a 45-mile radius has at least 1-2 posters in the main office or hallway....

It gets better--Not long after this started, another group started to use the same 'voluntary' clause to start posting the 10 commandments(!) in schools...It hasn't caught on as fast as the previous scheme, but there are several schools with them posted in the hallways....

In Allah We Trust

In Buddha We Trust

In Odin We Trust

In Goddess We Trust

etc.

14. What a way to exclude people, and I thought America was inclusive
It has religious people speaking for me and they do not. When it says "we" they should change it to "Christians". I actually wouldn't object to it at all then I just don't like a select group of people speaking for me without my permission. I don't care if they are the Majority. The US Constitution was written to Protect from the Tyranny of the Majority. It isn't being followed though.

16. The irreducible problem is, of course, the "we".
It is anti-democratic in itself, since it implies a 100% agreement. On the other hand, you can't really print "In god most of us trust". That would sound exactly for what it is: an incongruous statement. Why would you need to state this? You can also make a point with "In god we do not trust", as having equal value. And so on and so forth.

19. You know what, I don't care anymore.
If these idiots want their magic words scratched into the wall, and if it keeps them busy and unable to wreak more havok on other areas, just go for it. It's already on the money, and that's not going away soon. (Well, not until we're all bartering in Euros anyway).

21. Matthew 6:5-6
Matthew 6:5-6: "And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men....when thou prayest, enter into thy closet and when thou has shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret...."
