WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush said Sunday he was encouraged by the progress toward forming a unity government
in Iraq and asked Americans to remember the sacrifice of troops on the third anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion.

"I encourage the Iraqi leaders to continue to work hard to get this government up and running," Bush said
from the South Lawn of the White House after returning from a weekend at Camp David. "I'm encouraged by the progress."

Bush said he spoke by phone earlier in the day with the U.S. ambassador to Iraq, Zalmay Khalilzad, and had received
a positive report.
<snip>
Administration officials marked the anniversary by arguing that, despite the deaths of more than 2,300 U.S. troops and
unchecked violence that has killed tens of thousands of Iraqis, progress continues toward building a unified government
and nation.

1. If he keeps saying "progress" over and over it will happen
It's his campaign mode...keep repeating the message and "they" will believe!

4. I have this surreal image of Bush speaking to an empty room
As his support and his audience grows slimmer and slimmer, it seems the logical end point of this farce - Bush telling a bunch of empty chairs, in an empty room he's "encouraged by the progress".

5. Maybe Chimpy should get some
phone calls from Iraqi citizens and listen to their opinions of the "progress" that has been made. It looks like the primary gains have been in the area of destroying the quality of life, causing people to live with the uncertainty of who will be killed next or what thugs will search and damage their homes. Oh, and then there is the brain drain that has made great progress, with people who can manage it fleeing the country.
Give it a rest, Chimp. You have f*cked up royally.

6. He's a delusional idiot...
but he's an "optimistic" delusional idiot.

And that has to be good for a "few" more hundred-billions of American dollars -- and a "few" more thousands of American deaths.

To say nothing of a "few" more ten-thousands of horrific American injuries.

Can you say "hubris*".

*: Note Greek root: "wanton violence".

Iraqis Face 'Painful Anniversary' of War

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- On the eve of the third anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion, American troops clashed with gunmen north and west of Baghdad Sunday and insurgents lobbed a mortar round into the holy city of Karbala where a million Shiite pilgrims assembled for a major religious commemoration.

...

"It is a painful anniversary. We were expecting that Iraq would get better," Munthir Rasheed said. "But it is completely in reverse. Iraq has passed through three years which are the worst in its history."

Police said eight civilians, including a child, were killed in clashes between U.S. troops and gunmen in Duluiyah, 45 miles north of Baghdad. The town is in the Sunni Arab heartland where the Iraqi army and U.S. soldiers opened an airborne campaign last week to hunt for insurgents.

...

"It is unfortunate that we are in civil war. We are losing each day as an average 50 to 60 people throughout the country, if not more," Ayad Allawi told the British Broadcasting Corp. "If this is not civil war, then God knows what civil war is."

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush marked the anniversary of the Iraq war Sunday by touting the efforts
to build democracy there and avoiding any mention of the daily violence that rages three years after
he ordered an invasion.

The president didn't utter the word "war."

.
.
.

But enuf of the American masses are not outraged enough to stop the carnage in Iraq and Afghanistan, while their neighbors suffer from displacement by national disasters , homelessness, and lack of affordable health care . .

What's wrong with you people down there??

Y'all cross the globe occupying other people's countries, Iraq is only one of them, while the citizens of the USA languish with no homes and no food

BILLIONS of $$ spent for war, actually HUNDREDS of billions

How much for low-cost housing, medical benefits, veterans assistance etc.,?

Ya already know doncha?

WAR is number one when it comes to $$

y'all are just another part of that "collateral damage" thing

and oh yeah

they'll be STILL taxing your money when you are 6 feet under

Gotta luv that Kapitalist system, eh??

Powerful Explosion Rocks Holy Shiite City of Kerbala
A strong blast ripped through Karbala, a holy city located some 110 km south of Baghdad, on Sunday morning when many Shiite Muslims rallied in the city center for a religious commemoration, said reports reaching here from Karbala.
A loud explosion was heard near the Imam Hussein mosque. There is no immediate report on casualties.

The blast occurred when thousands of Shiite Muslims went to the mosque for an annual commemoration slated for Monday, when a 40-day mourning period for Imam Hussein came to an end.

Imam Hussein, one of the Islamic Prophet Mohammad's grandsons, was killed and buried in the city in 680 AD. Hussein's brother, Imam Abbas, was also buried in Karbala, which makes the city one of the holiest cities in Iraq.

25. God.. not that shill Nedra Pickler. I swear it's a pen name for Laura.
"Pickles", as Bush calls her. Every time I read a suckass article on AP, touting the progress in iraq or somehow blowing smoke up Bush's skirt, it's the same name on the byline: Nedra Pickler. Anyone know what her background would be??? She's the worst offender when it comes to propoganda.

26. It's over, and they know it.
They are coming to the realization that Iraq is unwinnable. At this point, they are just trying to salvage what can be salvaged. Their finest analysts and military scholars have told them that we cannot win in Iraq. They would like to keep the bases. They would certainly like to hang onto the oil which means that they will effectively rule the world.

But there is such a thing as "Winning the battle but losing the war". No doubt Cheney has gotten a phone call from the Chinese and the Japanese (they are our biggest creditors) that they can't continue to loan us money to keep fighting this war.

What you see here ("Bush encouraged by progress") is just window-dressing and stalling for time.

I've always said that the lack of money would be the ONLY thing that would stop these maniacs. Because they had so many plans for us, and Iraq was only Bus Stop #1.
