Attack on Iraq police 'kills 18'

Iraqi insurgents have launched an attack on a police station north of Baghdad,
killing 18 people and freeing prisoners, police say.

Officers said about 20 attackers, armed with assault rifles, rocket-propelled grenades
and mortars, set fire to the building and badly damaged it.

The attack took place in the town of Miqdadiya, near Baquba and 65km (40 miles) north
of Baghdad.

The raid lasted about an hour, before US helicopters helped drive the attackers away,
security officials told the AFP news agency.

1. george says look beyond the violence and bloodshed and see
all the progress that's being made.

Only progress I see here is that the insurgents are getting better and braver in their attacks. Think that's what blivet means?

3. AFP: Iraq rebels launch deadly assault to free prisoners
MUQDADIYA, Iraq (AFP) - Rebels stormed an Iraqi police station in a pre-dawn raid to free inmates, triggering the deadliest firefight this year that left at least 18 police and 10 insurgents dead.

Army and police commando reinforcements were rushed to the town of Muqdadiya northeast of Baghdad to hunt down the large rebel force and recapture the 32 prisoners freed in the assault.

Officials said at least 18 policemen and guards were killed, along with 10 rebels, in the raid which targeted a compound consisting of the main police station, the courthouse and municipal offices.

The fighting also left 13 members of the government forces wounded and led to the capture of 16 insurgents who were injured and left behind when other rebels made their escape.

4. Insurgents Storm Iraqi Jail, 28 Killed (same incident??)
Edited on Tue Mar-21-06 07:00 AM by leftchick
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Insurgents stormed a jail about dawn Tuesday in the Sunni Muslim heartland north of Baghdad, killing at least 17 policemen and a courthouse guard. Authorities said all 33 prisoners in the lockup were freed and 10 attackers were killed in the battle.

As many as 100 insurgent fighters — armed with automatic rifles and rocket-propelled grenades — stormed the judicial compound in Muqdadiyah, about 60 miles northeast of the capital. The assault began after the attackers fired a mortar round into the police and court complex, said police Brig. Ali al-Jabouri.

After torching the police station, the insurgents detonated a string of roadside bombs as they fled, taking the bodies of many of their dead comrades with them, police said. At least 13 policemen and civilians and 15 gunmen were wounded in the attack.

Five other police were wounded in two separate roadside bomb attacks targeting patrols in northern and southern Baghdad early Tuesday, police said.

5. 100 armed with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenade launchers.
These aren't insurgents, This is an Army.

We are fighting the Iraqi Army.

"As many as 100 insurgents armed with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenade launchers today stormed an Iraqi police station and freed at least 30 detainees, Iraqi police officials said. The attack sparked clashes that killed at least 19 people -- including several police officers in Muqdadiya, 65 miles north of Baghdad. Authorities are still attempting to determine the exact number of casualties."

10. "taking the bodies of many of their dead comrades with them, police said"
Translation: We really didn't kill 10 and wound 15 but hey, it sounds good. Also, this must be a new, never before seen, super-insurgent. They lobbed a single mortar round into the complex and it hit their target. :eyes:

12. Gunmen Kill 20 in Breakout at Iraqi Jail
Edited on Tue Mar-21-06 09:36 PM by Tab
BAGHDAD, Iraq - About 100 masked gunmen stormed a prison near the Iranian border Tuesday, cutting phone wires, freeing all the inmates and leaving behind a scene of devastation and carnage — 20 dead policemen, burned-out cars and a smoldering jailhouse.

At least 10 attackers were killed in the dawn assault on the Muqdadiyah lockup on the eastern fringe of the Sunni Triangle, police said. The raid showed the mostly Sunni militants can still assemble a large force, capable of operating in the region virtually at will — even though U.S. and Iraqi military officials said last year that the area was no longer an insurgent stronghold.

The insurgency's strength, spiraling sectarian violence and the stalemate over forming a government in
Iraq have led politicians and foreign policy experts to say Iraq is on the brink or perhaps in the midst of civil war.

In all, 33 prisoners were freed, including 18 insurgents who were detained Sunday during raids by security forces in the nearby villages of Sansal and Arab, police said. It was the capture of those insurgents that apparently prompted Tuesday's attack. The 15 other inmates were a mix of suspected insurgents and common criminals.
