N.Y., Calif. Air Is Dirtiest, EPA Says

LOS ANGELES -- New Yorkers and Californians breathe the dirtiest air in the nation and face higher cancer risks than the rest of the nation, according to the latest data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

New Yorkers' risk of developing cancer from air toxins is estimated to be 68 residents per million. In California, the risk is 66 residents per million.

The national average is 41.5 per million, according to the report, which was released in February and based on emissions of 177 chemicals in 1999, the most recent data available.

Oregon, Washington, D.C., and New Jersey had the third, fourth and fifth worst air in the nation, respectively, the EPA said. Rural residents of Wyoming, South Dakota and Montana breathed the cleanest air.

The EPA assessment evaluated toxins including heavy metals, such as lead; volatile chemicals, such as benzene; combustion byproducts, such as acrolein; and solvents, including perchloroethylene and methylene chloride....

5. It's not just the cars. it's the agriculture.

BION, the main source of pollution in the San Joaquin Valley is cow farts, ie: methane gas
from livestock. When the air quailty reports speak of "particulate matter," well, you
try not to think about what that means.

In addition, the prevailing winds blow from the Pacific coast inland, and the
stale air from Rt 99 westward gets trapped in the SJ Valley when it hits the Sierras.

Last summer was brutal temperature-wise and should have been one of the worst on
record for air quality, but for some reason, it turned out to be one of the best. The SJV
almost met the CA standards. Go figure.

I'm interviewing for a job in LA Friday. The air down there is actually better than the air I'm breathing
in the central valley.

and LA is a lot cleaner than it used to be.

The air in the Central Valley keeps getting worse though.
Maybe the Freepers have been buying Hummers while we've been buying Priuses.

Forest fires have something to do with it too.
