OTTAWA — Brigitte Bardot, the 1960s sex kitten and reconstituted animal rights activist, says Canada's seal hunt is a massacre that must stop.

Nunavut Education Minister Edward Picco condemned Bardot's tactics, saying northern hunters are the real ones being hurt.

It's the most legislated and regulated hunt in the world, and still these animal rights groups continue to use the beautiful seal to raise millions of dollars," Picco said as Inuit residents demonstrated outside the hotel where Bardot held her news conference.

But Hervieux-Payette noted that, since 1987, Canada has banned the hunting of seal pups while they still have their white coats.

An Inuk leader wants rock star Paul McCartney and his wife, Heather, to take part in Nunavut's seal hunt. Raymond Ningeocheak, second vice-president of Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated, is urging the celebrity couple to participate in a hunt to learn about Inuit culture and the importance of subsistence hunting.

"He should take part in some face-to-face meetings with Inuit in Nunavut and meet and go along on a hunt, preferably in the higher Arctic region," says Ningeocheak.

Seals may look like cute pets, but they are among the wild animals Inuit hunt to feed their families, he says. There is no farmland in Nunavut to produce food, he says. Traditional food, such as seal meat, helps to offset the high cost of store-bought food in the territory.

Ningeocheak says the McCartney's recent anti-sealing campaign is disrepectful to wildlife and is harmful to Inuit people. He's pleased Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams took a stand against the McCartneys.

I just recently saw an expose on this very subject and you are all missing the point...The Canadian Gov't is allowing over 300,000 (per year) seals to be beaten with clubs to death and in most instances...the seals are skinned alive...

After watching the expose I almost threw up...humans are so stupid and cruel...The expose I watched is actually against the law in Canada...( to tape the seal hunt is illegal) if they showed the program there, the people doing so would go to jail for 20 years...the Canadian Gov't doesn't want the truth to get out to it's citizens...this is terrible...and frightening...wake up America...

Wether she is a homophobe or not is really not the subject...and this crap about the Inuit peoples...is crap...in this day and age we...as humans should not have the need or desire to kill innocent and defenseless animals...and this is not for food...but for profit...

I must admit that I didn't tape the program...but the facts were pretty simple....this seal slaughter is for the pure profit of Canadian fisherman...they claim that the seals are eating a fish (I forget what kind)and thus ruining the fishing industry...

It's about the meaningless slaughter of 100,000's of thousands of seals, not just seal pups(the images are brutal and sell papers) but these seals are being beaten to death and skinned alive...How about we skin these murders alive and send a real message that destroying one species for profit is inhumane...and then claim that that we had to kill them because we were loosing money...oh better yet...let's now claim that if we don't kill the killers...someone else may loose their way of life...

As far as the program I watched...it quoted the Canadian laws...but again...I only know what I saw and unfortunately...I don't know Canadian law...I will ask my sister for help in this...she's an attorney...maybe.

The "intuit" thing I still stand by...as I understand the Canadian law...they can and still kill what they need and use...so bringing them into the argument is a moot point...just to distract people from the truth...

The general feeling toward the hunt here, I find, is the same as it is everywhere else in the world. People don't like it. But, there's no spin, or hidden truth, everyone knows exactly what is going on. There are many activism groups in Canada committed to stopping it.
Truthfully, the only true spin and lies you've seen were in that doc you watched.

I agree on the inuit thing, many, many cultures have been forced to give up cruel traditions, why should they be any different?

It's nice to know that others understand, myself included...but the program was only about 25 minutes long...and the spin of the program would make anyone upset...with any kind of heart...

It stated that the seal slaughter was to stop the seals from eating a certain type of fish...and that fish's population wasn't going down because of the seals but over fishing...is this not true either?

I must say, I will not know unless I go there myself and watch...but that reality is a bit out of my reach at present...I work too much...60-70 hrs a week...unfortunately...

Oh, the program also said that showing the pictures of the slaughter was illegal in Canada...is this not true either?

If they need to kill the seals, then shoot them...as the old saying goes...a picture paints a thousand words...and I was shocked to see men acutally beating the seals to death then skinning them...some were still alive...those images have haunted me for weeks...since I saw the program...
