Crist for abortion ban, adoption incentives

PENSACOLA - Attorney General Charlie Crist would sign an abortion ban similar to South Dakota's if elected governor, he said Wednesday before announcing proposals to increase adoption and protect children from Internet predators.

Asked by a Catholic priest whether he would sign a bill like South Dakota's abortion ban, which only allows the procedure to save a woman's life, Crist answered, "Yes, I would."

But Crist later said the South Dakota law, set to go into effect July 1, is too restrictive, and he would sign a ban only if it also allowed abortions for victims of rape or incest. Crist added, "Promoting a culture of life is preferable to me than passing laws."

Under Crist's proposal to give people incentives to adopt children, those who adopt a child privately would receive $3,000 a year for three years. Families who adopt foster children would get $5,000 a year until the child turns 18.

On a noon conference call touting his 67-county campaign team, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jim Davis jumped on Charlie Crist's statement that he would sign a ban much like South Dakota's recently passed law. Davis said he would veto such a bill in Florida.

Davis: “I believe politicians should stay out of the difficult, personal decisions about life and death that Floridians and their families face every day. It was wrong when our state leaders played politics with the tragic life of Terri Schiavo, and it’s still wrong."

Nearly four hours later, Rod Smith's campaign jumped on the same issue: "I am absolutely committed to protecting a woman's right to choose," Smith said in a statement. "As Governor, I will lead the fight against legislation like the South Dakota law, as well as any efforts that seek to criminalize women and doctors. I firmly believe that personal decisions should be just that - personal."

9. People already get adoption subsidies if they adopt foster kids

At least they do in Michigan. It's good for encouraging foster parents and relatives to adopt foster kids. I don't think we should be paying people to adopt privately, or for the new-baby adoptions, or it comes close to being a baby-selling business. Then you get people adopting kids who should never adopt kids, greedy people just in it for the money.
