Whistleblower group asks Rep. Souder for apology

A group of government whistle-blowers wants U.S. Rep. Mark Souder to apologize for calling certain insiders "celebrities of the media" during a meeting last week.

During the meeting, Souder, R-Ind. spoke against a proposal by Rep. Ed Markey, D-Mass, to create legislation giving Department of Homeland Security employees whistle-blower protection.

But the National Security Whistleblowers Coalition, which represents about 85 insiders, said Souder went too far with his criticism.

"I don't see a bunch of these whistle-blowers out there panning for food because they whistled," Souder said during the meeting. "They're celebrities in the media. They sell books and all that. It's a bogus argument for political purposes."

The group has sent Souder a letter asking him to apologize.

"We read with astonishment, disappointment and a great deal of outrage the comments you made," coalition founder Sibel Edmonds said in the letter.
