Edwards Revives Talk of Rich-Poor Divide

March 23,2006 | CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- At an alumni center decorated with Oriental carpets and Remington-style bronzes, John Edwards is talking again about an America divided between the rich and poor.

Since it was announced in February 2005, the center has held "discussions," "conversations," even a "summit" about poverty and related issues. A two-day conference on "Challenging the Two Americas: New Policies to Fight Poverty" began Thursday.

Under a two-year contract that expires next February, Edwards holds the title of alumni distinguished professor at the law school and is paid $40,000 a year. Edwards, the son of a textile mill worker who made millions as a trial lawyer before running for the Senate in 1998, also is paid for some speeches and consults for a New York investment firm.

"John Edwards has never really stopped running for president," said Bill Peaslee, spokesman for the North Carolina Republican Party. "While hopefully some good will come out of this (week's) endeavor, we believe the primary reason for John Edwards' involvement in this issue is less than altruistic."

First, I'd like to say that this is a vile hit piece on John Edwards under the guise of a "news story". It's amazing what AP is willing to do in order to harm anyone actually talking about poverty and class in this country.

Second, reading through the bile the writer of this article spews at Edwards, I can see that Edwards is serious about the problem of poverty and classism. It's my belief that the next election is going to center strongly on the economy that bush* and his cronies in congress have destroyed in favor of their ultra wealthy friends. I'm sure most of us have our favorites for the 2008 run, so I'd like to hear what everyone thinks their candidate is likely to do about the state of our economy.

2. I read the article

I don't perceive it as a "hit piece." I'm a huge Edwards fan as well. The article is standard AP fodder. Nothing special about it.

3. Even if the popular think it should be about the economy or eviroment-

it is the press/media that will 'control' what the issues will be about-for the most part. I think of how Kerry gave several speeeches on the eviroment and control of ports-but these issues were drowned out.

4. If you want to be president so that you can alleviate poverty and reduce

the imbalance between wealth and poverty that might tip over and sink this nation, how is that not altruistic? What would not be altruistic is if you said, fuck it, I'm going to ride this wealth imbalance thing to the top, and I'm voting Republican, nation be damned.
