Edited on Fri Mar-24-06 08:18 AM by BleedingHeartPatriot
And, Tancredo's gearing up for the fight.

Bolding is mine..."a job Americans won't do"!!! How about a job that doesn't provide a living wage. Sheesh!

Bush touts immigrant-worker plan as Senate panel moves forward
By Anne C. Mulkern
Denver Post Staff Writer

Washington - With the U.S. Senate starting debate soon on immigration reform, President Bush pushed Thursday for a program to allow illegal immigrants to work legally in the country.

"Part of enforcing our borders is to have a guest-worker program that encourages people to register their presence so that we know who they are and says to them, 'If you're doing a job an American won't do, you're welcome here for a period of time to do that job,"' Bush said during a meeting with representatives of groups that support the idea, including Denver Roman Catholic Archbishop Charles Chaput.

>snip (Frist is trying to figure out how please his master yet not alienate voters and the House GOP)

If it appears there will not be enough agreement in the Senate to pass legislation, Frist might block a vote, which could delay action on the immigration issue until after the fall election.

>snip

"It's going to be a messy fight," said Tamar Jacoby, research fellow at the conservative Manhattan Institute for Policy Research in New York.

Lots of GOP infighting. gwb just keeps stirring this up.

Excellent article, detailing all the contortions the GOP is trying to do around this bill.

1. That's not what they said in Econ 101, back in '78.
They said the curves of supply and demand would determine the prices paid for the factors of production. They didn't say capital would influence the supply of labor.

capital".

Are the mega-wealthy benefactors of this cash largess eventually going to provide the sole metric for the "curves of supply and demand"? MKJ

3. I'm really confused. On Lou Dobbs last night they were saying
that it's the Repugs who are giving bushie a hard time about the guest worker program not the Democrats. Why is Harry Reid and others pushing for the guest worker program or am I reading this wrong?

Committee doesn't finish the bill on time (in two weeks).

I don't understand the strategy, maybe it's to keep the debate going and highlight the fissures in the GOP? MKJ

14. We can't move 11 million out - so Dems go with McCain/Kennedy
The most comprehensive reform proposal on the table -- the Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act proposed by Sens. Edward Kennedy (D-MA) and John McCain (R-AZ) -- http://immigration.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://www.shusterman.com/cgi%2Dbin/ex%2Dlink.pl%3Fthomas.loc.gov/cgi%2Dbin/query/z%3Fc109:S.1033:
includes a responsible plan to help undocumented workers become lawful, tax-paying members of our society. To earn citizenship, individuals would have to apply for a six-year temporary status, have a job, pay taxes, obey the law, learn English, and pay a $2,000 penalty for having come here illegally. Nor could they "cut in front of the more than 3 million 'green card' applicants who have obeyed the law." This is a rigorous but fair process. Many conservatives, however, including President Bush, support a limited temporary "guest worker" program, which allows undocumented to apply only for a six-year temporary residency. This strategy is impractical and irresponsible on its face: undocumented workers will have little incentive to expose their illegal status if they face mandatory deportation after just six years. It is also unpopular. According to a Time poll, the overwhelming number of Americans (76 percent) favor gaving undocumented individuals a path to earned citizenship.

6. This is so fricking funny.
Bush vs. the Congressional Repugs.

The Repugs can't even agree on how to play the immigration issue! A key issue, and they are fumbling and bumbling and stepping on each others' feet!

And some people are worried about 2006? The Repugs are going to get slaughtered..

8. Why is it American won't do those jobs?
I would think that would be the question and then try and find an American remedy. Not providing jobs with such low pay that no American can afford them but illegal aliens can. Once they become "legal" those jobs won't be acceptable to them either. If they are here legally they can afford to be a bit more choosy and their employors will have to follow the laws as well.

for a living wage for Americans.

I would disagree with the premise that legal workers would be more choosy. They would remain Mexican citizens, so would not really rock the boat here, since their alliance would be elsewhere.

The only thing that would change is that they couldn't be deported and their employer couldn't be fined. MKJ

11. Right, raise the min. wage and provide national health insurance!
Bush just wants to import cheap labor who will work for nothing.

Americans would do those jobs if there was a possibility of making a decent living at them and getting health care. So raise the minimum wage and provide all Americans with national health insurance.

16. Maybe, maybe not
But they shouldn't have to. And Dems shouldn't play into the hands of union busting pro-business Republicans. Workers should be paid what they're worth!

9. Just sit back and watch: Grover Norquist vs. Tom Tancredo
"I think the whole Senate will cheerfully pass something close to what the president wants," said Grover Norquist, a liaison between Bush and Congress.

Then, if/when it gets to the House...

The push to pass a bill that could be signed into law was so strong that Specter, R-Pa. - known for his pragmatism - reached out to Tancredo more than two weeks ago.

"His purpose was trying to see where we were on it," Tancredo said. "We explained to the folks that came over (that) I can't imagine there's a way to compromise on it."
