Rumsfeld Says U.S. Trainers May Be in Iraq in 2009

U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said on March 23 U.S. forces may still be in Iraq in 2009 to train Iraqi troops but sought to avoid "speculating about specific numbers or on specific dates."

Rumsfeld, during a Pentagon briefing, also prodded Iraqi leaders to form a new government, saying their failure to do so since Dec. 15 elections has perpetuated violence and killing.

Asked about President George W. Bush’s remark on March 21 that Bush expected future presidents to decide when to bring home U.S. troops -- suggesting they will be in Iraq until his term ends in January 2009 -- Rumsfeld said, "I mean, we may be helping to train and equip some forces in Iraq in 2009."

"Are we making plans to do that? We’re making plans to assist the Iraqis and the Afghans in training and equipping their forces so that they can take over the responsibility" for security in those countries, Rumsfeld added.
