Federal judge appointed to FISA court ("former Whitewater prosecutor")

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. District Judge John D. Bates has been named to replace a judge who resigned from the secretive court set up by Congress to oversee domestic spying.

Bates, a former Whitewater prosecutor, was appointed by Chief Justice John Roberts in February to replace U.S. District Judge James Robertson, who quit shortly after news reports about the Bush administration going around the court to eavesdrop on U.S. citizens suspected of communicating with terrorists.

The appointment was not announced by the court. Secrecy News reported the appointment Friday after it appeared in Bates' official online biography. <snip>

Bates was named to the federal bench in 2001 by President Bush. Prior to joining the court, Bates worked as a private practice attorney. From 1995 to 1997, he was an assistant U.S. attorney who wored for Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr on the investigation into President Clinton's Whitewater investment deals. <snip>

I have always said that the judiciary has been by and large the most resistant branch of government to the death of integrity that BushPutinism brings as it spreads like a cancer.

But I think even this institution is about to fall to the Nazi/Soviet level...maybe a bit slower than the rest of the Empire, but no less thoroughly, in the end.

13. We all would rather that such judges not be put on the FISA

panel. Yet, regardless of the makeup of the FISA court, it would still be better if Bush would stop breaking the law and get the warrants from the court. At least there would be a written record of who is being surveiled.
