Marines Try to Recruit 78-Year-Old Woman
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=817&e=13&u=/ap/20060325/ap_on_fe_st/elderly_recruit

SAUGUS, Calif. - Sonia Goldstein was flattered by the nice recruiting letter asking her to consider becoming one of "the few, the proud." But at age 78, she believes she's just a little old to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps.

"I couldn't believe it," Goldstein told KCAL-TV on Friday. "My girls were sitting here ... we were in hysterics, we laughed so hard."

The letter told her the corps could use her unique language skills, but also warned that life as a Marine would test her physical and mental abilities "beyond anything you've ever known."

"There I am with my walker. I can't maneuver from here to there without it," said Goldstein, who added that her only language is English.

"I'll do whatever I could for this wonderful country we live in," she said. "But you know, this is kind of stretching it a bit."

Is our military that hard up?

3. Well.....
the way the Bush admin views the elderly in this country this could mean:
1)a clever way to cut the number of those on Social Security, Medicare, Prescription drug program.
2)scared shitless about facing another group of angry seniors.
3)grandmotherly peace protesters/terrorists are a clear and present danger to America's security.
4)hoping to get his Dad to re up to avoid further unpleasant phone calls-(my coalition is bigger than yours).

5. Sounds like a new Medicare program that goes a step beyond
what Cheney envisions. See Cheney's plan is once senior Americans turn 78, you take 'em out in the woods and shoot 'em in the face. By signing them up into the military, at least you might get some use out of 'em before you shoot 'em. Please do NOT misconstrue my rather macabre humor as thinking Medicare is a laughing matter. I am SICK about what is happening to social programs in this country.

13. I am 54 yrs old and I keep receiving recruiting letters
I am in a profession that they are interested in. Some of my colleagues are reservists and have been deployed. One over 55. The other in late 60's.
They are going directly to combat situations in Iraq.

Yes the military is hard up. And several in demand professions have been
quietly discussing whether or not they could begin drafting us. Some of us even have plans on what to do if that happens.
