The Indy Racing League rookie Paul Dana, a new teammate of the 2004 Indianapolis 500 champion Buddy Rice and the 2005 Indy 500 rookie sensation Danica Patrick, died today after he was involved in a collision during a practice session five hours before the season opener at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Florida.
Dana, a native of St. Louis who would have celebrated his 31st birthday on April 15, was pronounced dead at noon today at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. Rice and Patrick, whose cars are co-owned by the 1986 Indy 500 champion, Bobby Rahal, and the late-night talk-show host David Letterman, withdrew from the Toyota Indy 300. "It is a very black day for us," Rahal said at a news conference before the race.
Dana was injured fatally when his car slammed into a car driven by Ed Carpenter, the stepson of the I.R.L. founder Tony George. Carpenter's car had spun in the second turn on the mile-and-a-half oval, then slid down the high banking and came to a stop near the bottom of the track before it was walloped by Dana's car, traveling at nearly 200 miles an hour.
Buddy Lazier, who was on the track at the time of the accident, said Dana passed him and a car driven by Scott Sharp before hitting Carpenter's car. Both Lazier and Sharp were able to slow their cars to avoid hitting Carpenter, whose car is also owned by George. "He carried way too much speed in and wasn't aware of what was going on around him," Lazier told The Associated Press in an interview.
