Putin 'copied uni thesis' (Brookings Inst says he plagerized)
Edited on Sun Mar-26-06 06:09 PM by Rose Siding
By Tony Allen-Mills
March 27, 2006
THE career of Russian President Vladimir Putin was built at least in part on a lie, according to US researchers.

A new study of an economics thesis written by Mr Putin in the mid-1990s has revealed that large chunks of it were copied from an American text.
Mr Putin was labelled a plagiarist at the weekend after a pair of researchers at the Brookings Institution, a Washington DC think tank, established that the President's academic credentials were based on a dissertation he had lifted in part verbatim from the Russian translation of a management study written by two professors at the University of Pittsburgh in 1978.

According to the Kremlin's official biography, Mr Putin, 53, obtained a PhD in economics from the St Petersburg Mining Institute in 1997. But the US researchers also established that his thesis was for a lesser degree that would not have entitled him to a full doctorate.

The embarrassing revelation that the former KGB agent may have cheated and lied about his qualifications follows a long search by US scholars for evidence of the President's academic prowess. A copy of the thesis was eventually found in the electronic files of a Moscow technical library.

6. Not to mention an abundance of plagerism
Bush MUST have plagerized SOMETHING. We're not looking hard enough!

Really though, my first thought was that this was retaliation for the report about Russia having aided Iraq. Imagine all the US spies that yearn for the known knowns of the cold war.

8. They're pissed, because it was discovered recently that the Russkies
got ahold of the plans for the 'shock and awe' strut to Baghdad, and passed it on to Saddam's boyz. Now they think that's why the entire Iraqi Army, plus the Republican Guard, just melted away.

This is payback....you'd think someone would have figured this out beforehand. Isn't there a single asshole on a single, solitary Russia Desk in any of our state or intel agencies who is reading this shit? Ya mean NO ONE bothered to give the clown's thesis a once-over??? Ever?? Please!!! Hell, that's what those guys DO for a living!!

Come on!

4. I don't know - Washington Times?
"The Washington Times reported that six diagrams and tables from the 218-page thesis also appeared to "mimic" similar charts in the US work."

There seems to be a bit of a campaign to discredit the Russians right now in the U.S. - probably because they aren't going along with U.S. plans for Iran.

Has anyone seen Bush's thesis from Harvard Business School? That would be interesting.

Or how about Blair's plagiarized justification for war - the dodgey document, I think they called it, that lifted sections of some grad student's MA thesis off the internet and passed it off as confidential intelligence work?

5. interesting that this would come to light right after we get the news abou
russia helping iraq, hmmmmmm?
and, just as a matter of curiousity, why does it matter to US whether he plagiarized or not? after all, the chimperor probably had someone taking his tests for him, and that is not being brought to light.

If we can't get rid of Dubya, who isn't even smart enough to plagiarize, why worry about Putin? Let the Russians deal with him.

29. I can forgive a lot of human frailties
esp in a Pol. But absconding with the work of a scholar and taking the credit is snake piss low.

Plagiarism seems to be on the rise everywhere. It's like everyone uses google(tm) but no one ever figures that they will have to pass through that filter as well.
