Blogger up for non-fiction award (Riverbend)
27 March 2006

An anonymous blog by a young woman in war-torn Iraq has been longlisted for BBC Four's Samuel Johnson Prize for non-fiction.

Baghdad Burning, a first-hand account written under the pseudonym Riverbend, is one of 19 books in contention.

Others include Alan Bennett's Untold Stories, a biography of 19th-Century cook and author Mrs Beeton and a study of post-war US-Soviet relations.

The winner of the £30,000 prize will be announced on 14 June.

1. That's great
That site has been in my bookmarks for a long time. I read it often. I even occasionally have posted excerpts from it. Good luck Riverbend.

Best wishes to Riverbend!

11. There is justice!
Her's is one of the best blogs around. 360 and a wake up was very good, but lacked the emotional impact of her work.

17. Riverbend is a great writer, keen observer....
Congrats to her. Her latest post is a great marker of where Iraq is after three years, particularly where she describes how the in-fighting between different sects is very "convenient" for the occupiers (us) in Iraq. I remember reading her during the early months of the war and she was like a lifeline to sanity.

20. I SO hope she wins

If anyone deserves this award, its Riverbend. I have enormous respect for her writing.

I have been in awe of her emotional resolve and courage since the first time I read her blog. I cannot imagine the inner turmoil she must be experiencing every single day of her life, yet, she hangs tough and makes it her mission to tell the unvarnished truth.

I pray she stays safe and wish her all the best in this contest. There is not another voice I can think of which has effected me so deeply as hers during these past few years.
