Anti-Americanism madness, says Blair
BRITISH Prime Minister Tony Blair today branded growing anti-Americanism around the world as "madness" in the face of the challenges confronting global peace in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere. In an address to a rare joint sitting of the national Parliament, Mr Blair urged the formation of a global alliance in the struggle for democracy and justice, and said this alliance "does not end with, but it does begin with, America".

"I do not always agree with the United States - sometimes they can be difficult friends to have," he said. "But the strain of frankly anti-American feeling in parts of European and world politics is madness when set against the long-term interests of the world we believe in," he said. Mr Blair spoke of the common values of Australia and Britain, including a belief in democracy, rule of law and fairness. He said that despite the presence of anti-Americanism in Europe and elswhere, particularly following the US military campaign in Iraq, the United States was pivotal to ensuring a global policy of engagement rather than isolation.

"The danger with America today is not that they are too much involved, the danger is that they decide to pull up the drawbridge and disengage. We need them involved. We want them engaged," he said. "The reality is that none of the problems that press in on us can be resolved or even contemplated without them. Our task is to ensure that with them we do not limit this agenda to security."

Mr Blair, who along with Australia has committed troops to fight alongside US forces in Iraq, said this was not the time to withdraw from the conflict, saying while "the going is tough, we tough it out". "This is not the time to walk away," he said.

1. The world doesn't hate the USA, Bliar.
It hates the current administration.

(What's so maddening is that you KNOW he knows this, but he's being disingenuous, calling it "anti-American" sentiment.)

17. Sorry, I disagree.
The people of the United States are increasingly disliked and mistrusted throughout the world. They are incredibly ignorant, self-centered, pushy and loud. People in every region in the world will tell you that.

The Bush administration just makes it easy for that sentiment to rise to the top and bubble over, but there is also genuine resentment for the people who enable him over and over again with virtually no meaningful resistance.

19. it's called the concept of the 'Ugly American', and I've seen'em first
hand while traveling around Central America and Europe. Arrogant, condescending, pushy, loud, obnoxious, ignorant... these adjectives all accurately describe the 'Ugly American) tourist.

Bush is the personification of an 'Ugly American', IMO.

25. I felt horribly ashamed
of the actions of some of my fellow Americans while traveling in Central America. I was embarrassed for and by them. I'm going to Switzerland and Austria in June and hope I can pass as Canadian.

32. I've read many books on the Caribbean tourist industry
The "ugly american" is a myth. Hotel workers in barbados and elsewhere prefer american visitors, they are the best tippers and are the most laid back. Canadians a close second. Europeans, particularly the French and English tip lousy, are uptight and bitchy. The reason for the myth is that small countries in Europe have so many American tourists invading them. Believe me, if the US had as many European tourists visiting here, there would be an "ugly european" stereotype.

Hate the administration, not the people. Americans for the most part, in my opinion, are some of the most polite and charitable people in the world.

34. The rest of the world
looks at it that WE are ALL responsible for who is in office.. Even if we did not vote for the POS. This administration is responsible for the animosity shown towards Americans. After Sept 11th, most of the world was wanting to reach out and help.. Thanks to this administration for destroying all of that good will.

11. Anti-Bush
not anti-Americanism, and I agree, Blair knows the difference! Anytime I have travelled, I have practiced "When in Rome" and have been treated extremely well by everybody in return. I garnered great sympathy, in fact, for our elections having been stolen, while in Latin America. Pretty pathetic, huh?

14. blair believes in the foundation of his authority
And with that, he extends his government's legimacy,
to that load of freakers who hyjakked the US 757 of state,
as if they are spokespersons for anyone outside of their constituency,
no rather blair gets along with warmerica, bubbling invasive hate.
No wonder he's defending his war buddies across the pond,
he's not any serious touch with the real american reality,
only propping up the carpet bagging bush vagabonds,
driving the good word of our people in to bankruptcy.

No wonder he's a bit hard to get along with,
that psychotic corrupt maladministration of inadequacy,
swiftboating larcenous graft in corporate petroglyphs,
so that all of us are distrusted, some might say, appropriately.
The loose cannon corporate machine we might call a government,
reflected ravings of lame ducky blair, apologistically irrelevant.

Bush and Blair represent that special combination of

NARCISSISM with MASSIVE DELUSIONS

They think that they are their nations, an odd identification but not
if your barking mad, which they both are.

If there were ever an ignorant, irresponsible and ethocentric nation (and population) deserved the antipathy of the world, 21st Century America is it (ironic, considering its multi-ethnic composition).

And I have news for the Brits- if you think you enjoy some special relationship with America- think again.

A large majority of Americans neither know anything about your country- nor will give a damn about your people when it comes time to face up to their wasteful and unsustainable lifestyles. The sooner Britain and the rest of the world clues into that fact, the better for everyone- including Americans.

I don't agree with James Kunstler about a good many things, but he was dead on when he said that Americans will elect cornpone NAZI's (with all that entails) before they'll give up their "right" to SUV's and McMansions.
