Republicans behind '06 election polls

WASHINGTON, March 26 (UPI) -- Strategists say if congressional elections were held today, the Democratic Party would probably win control of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Democrats would also come close to winning control of the U.S. Senate, Time magazine reported.

Time said its latest poll showed President George W. Bush's public approval rating was 39 percent, and 60 percent of those surveyed said they think the country is on the wrong track. The poll found 50 percent favored the Democratic Party, while 41 percent favored the Republican Party.

...

Stuart Rothenberg, who writes the Rothenberg Political Report, said the Democratic Party gain in congressional seats this November "will be considerable."

1. While this is excellent news,

I'm not sure how they can say that the Dems will gain control of the House, unless they polled each Congressperson's district individually, because while the country may want the Democrats to have control, they also have that irritating habit of assuming that their local incumbent is "one of the good ones."

3. Exactly. I think we will win some seats back though.
Getting our majorities back is a possibility, but it will be a lot of work regardless. A big problem is the fact that so many people sit out of these midterm elections. Even in 1974 the turnout was 38%.

I think this website has a pretty realistic analysis.

4. the conclusions are indeed based on district-level analysis
even though that is not mentioned in the article. i have seen other analyses that more carefully list retirements, safe districts, polling in competitive districts, etc.

not that it all matters too much at this early stage, but we're certainly in better shape now that it's become more fashionable to hate shrub.

6. There is a God!
There is a God!
Is this what it takes to get this country to wake up and smell the coffee???
This is the perfect storm for Democrats and other progressives. I just hope and pray there are some good candidates who will have the balls like Russ Feingold and Jim McDermott, and a few others to stand up to the Bush administration!
Maybe God really is out there with a white beard! Does anybody really beleive the media is controlled by Liberals?

8. Im not very optimistic..
I wouldn't be surprised if the repukes picked up a few seats. Never underestimate the idiocy of the American voter.
